the follow-up to 2525 told a story about a man killing himself by nailing himself to a jail cell wall after sexually assaulting a bar fly..... not sure how this could have missed...

There are artists like Zager and Evans and Norman Greenbaum who are known for 1 big hit and nothing else. True one hit wonders .

This thread is already making claims for multi million selling acts as one hit wonders.

It wasn't a big hit, but it was the song they are remembered for by far the most. It deserved to be a much bigger hit:

David & David - "Welcome to the Boomtown"

Nena had quite a few chart tunes also. I hardly call her a one hit.

The MASH theme, Suicide Is Painless, getting there was strangely great. (Reached #1 in the UK in May, 1980.)

I would define "One Hit Wonder" as being someone who had only one worldwide hit. Living In The Plastic Age was not a worldwide hit.

if you suggest a band and any of our experts can name 2-8 other singles in a flash, they aren't a one-hit wodner

A single is not automatically a hit. Especially worldwide.

OP should of stated #1, top ten or any any chart placement. US/Worldwide etc...
To me a hit is something that charted and received radio play. -anywhere.
Otherwise I find it a demeaning descriptor.
