You were right, the original 16-track analogue tapes were in bad shape, their transfer was done to computer.
If I understood correctly, the files then were copied on fresh analogue multitrack tape with a DAC, so the mixing and the mastering were done in the analogue domain again.

(I feel a slight resemblance with this MoFi controversy going-on currently...)

 

I bought this Guitar Trio album (1996) for the first time. I've had the first 2 for decades, but for some reason never go this. It's not as fiery as the first one, but it's a fantastic sounding recording. A great listen.

Some sound almost like solo-recordings with other contributions 'flown in' and a track like Espiritu is a solo-track. But musically it may be the finest of the trio, I think.
