OK mea culpa. No fake stereo. I was relying on memory.

The stereo mixes on Hey Jude/Beatles Again are identical to the titles eventually issued on Past Masters 1 & 2, correct?

Yes. The one caveat is that some people regard "Paperback Writer" as a 'remix' on "Hey Jude", when in fact it's the same stereo mix as first appeared on "A Collection of Beatles Oldies" but with the channels reversed and the balance accidentally leaning slightly toward the channel with the backing vocals. Presumably somebody copied the master tape without exercising a great deal of care.

One piece of information I perhaps should have quoted above is that the remixes were done by the following:

Producer - George Martin (whether present or not, he's credited)
Engineer - Geoff Emerick & Phil McDonald
Tape Op - Richard Lush (2 December); Neil Richmond (5 December)

    That pretty much covers it.

It is the most stunning looking collection ever issued of previously released material. It looks like a brand new album, no cheap knock-off here. Not a single filler track either.

The Beatles Again was the very first Beatles album I ever got into; my folks had that album, Rubber Soul, and Abbey Road, but for whatever reason, The Beatles Again was the one I sunk my teeth into the first. Great jacket photos by Linda McCartney (of course, I had no idea that it was the last time all 4 Beatles were photographed together at the same time), odd song selection, but all the tunes were great; for the time, it was an ideal sampler of their music.

Still have that original album and play it every now and then.

The Beatles look like Gods in those photos, timeless and classic. Magic was captured there for sure. I could see it even when I was 8 years old - that is how powerful those images are.

I have to disagree with this. I have original U.S. Apple pressings of Imagine and Ram that sound pretty incredible, Ram in particular.

I have a few seconds of 8mm film of this photo shoot somewhere on a DVD. I think Linda used Paul's 8mm camera. It is absolutely magic.

Yeah my mom had The Beatles Again in her collection, and, when I was a wee lad, I didn't understand that it wasn't a "real" album. I think on some level I grasped that side one was from a different era than side two, but I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about why that was so. Side two always seemed to make a lot of sense as an album side to me - I suppose the appearance of "Don't Let Me Down" on this album is the reason that song ultimately did not appear on Let It Be?

I have mono fold downs of Abbey Road and Let It Be. Paid 25.00 for both.

This still has the only release of "I Should Have Known Better" in true Stereo in the US (well, expect for that version on Reel Music w/ the "fixed" harmonica drop out.)

I remember being pretty confused as a boy in mid-late 70s, when I knew Hey Jude was released a few months before Let It Be, but I did not know LIB was recorded more than a year before its release. I couldn't figure out why they looked younger on the LIB cover than the HJ cover.

Love to see this included in "The Capitol Albums, Volume 3"...assuming there ever is such a thing.

  15. You'll want to say more than that, when you see this eBay auction for a U.S. Apple - Hey Jude LP with a different back cover. Seller says only 2 copies know to exist.

When 6 bids in already, all I can say is :wtf:.

I think it was because Don't Let Me Down was used as the B-side on the Get Back single.

"Something" and "Come Together" both appeared on Abbey Road, breaking the "no singles on the album rule" once and for all. Unless I'm mistaken, The Beatles Again/Hey Jude came out just a few months before Let It Be, and I'm guessing they didn't want to duplicate "Don't Let Me Down" as an album track within such a short time span.

I'm guessing that you are guessing correctly.

On the other hand, wasn't Hey Jude originally just a US only album? Did it come out in the UK in early 1970?

I would have included the 'Get Back' single and 'The Inner Light', nixing the AHDN tracks:

    Side 1:

    Paperback Writer
    Rain
    The Inner Light
    Lady Madonna
    Revolution

    Side 2:

    Hey Jude
    Don't Let Me Down
    Get Back
    Old Brown Shoe
    Ballad Of John And Yoko

I think that would have been a vastly superior album.

Released in the USA February 26, 1970. Not released in the UK until 1979, though EMI did manufacture Export Copies.

Yes, it's a shame that "The Inner Light" never made an album until Past Masters, unless I'm mistaken.

If I were in charge, the two AHDN songs would have already been on Something New (in place of Komm Gib me your hand) and Paperback Writer and Rain would have already been on Yesterday and Today...

    Drive My Car
    I'm Only Sleeping
    Nowhere Man
    Dr. Robert
    Paperback Writer
    Rain

    And Your Bird Can Sing
    If I Needed Someone
We Can Work It Work It Out
    Day Tripper
    Yesterday

Of course that leaves Act Natually and What Goes On without an album....and that's OK :D

So then, we come to 1970 and we are compiling the Hey Jude album. It would look like this:

    The Inner Light
    Lady Madonna
    Hey Jude
    Revolution
    Across The Universe (wildlife)

    Get Back
    Don't Let Me Down
    Ballad of John & Yoko
    Old Brown Shoe
    Let It Be (single)

It was released on a Spanish LP in 1971 in fake stereo. However, this LP has to be the worst sounding Beatles EMI release of all time.
