Hi-Fi stores? Didn't they use that term in the 1950's?

Do you mean High End stores? If that's what you mean, go see Elliot Midwood's ACOUSTIC IMAGE. A great guy with great toys.

Over this neck of the woods, mere mortals (not very rich people) refer to it as hi-fi!

    thanks for the tip!

Sound Factor ain't too shabby. They have a couple of locations; I go to the one on Santa Monica and they have another in the Valley somewhere.

Not intentionally trying to stray off-topic, but I would assume there were lots of really great Hi-Fi / High-End, audio / video / electronics shops in L.A. back in the 70's?

Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui, Kenwood, et al stacked as high as the ceilings would allow :) Man, what a great trip back in time that would be!

Well, Monrovia is northeast of LA, but I heartily concur. He'd be my first choice close to LA. My real first choice would be my friend Gene Rubin (www.generubinaudio.com), but he's in Ventura, which is 60 miles west of Los Angeles, and he's by appointment only.

Shelley's Stereo in Woodland Hills is also nice, with lots of McIntosh gear.

He dedicates too much of it to his "museum," that's true. But if you're going to buy a turntable, he's the best guy to buy it from. He is peerless as a turntable technician.

Several more - haven't been there in several years - but here goes:
Upscale Audio in Upland - Kevin Deal's place
    Digital Ear in Tustin
And a pretty cool little "hi-fi" store in Whittier - can't remember the name of the place - but an original McIntosh dealer

The proprietor once told me not to breathe on the turntable when I just leaned over to see what kind it was. I'll never forget that.

Digital Ear left, but there are new tennants there and they may still be using the name. I was pretty close with Digital Ear being they were just down the street from here. Gary Arluck, who was the manager there has a new place somewhere around Hacienda Heights or Whitter.

A friend of mine just got boxes on boxes of records from his dad, and asked me about gear. He wants to buy today, and he wants to do it right. He also wants to build a modest home theater system - Speakers, receiver, turntable, preamp. Are the stores listed here still good? Does anyone know of any more in the Los Angeles area? We didn't get into details, but I think he's ready to spend a few grand, but not ten grand. Any tips are much appreciated!

I saw a large place near Sunset Blvd. Forgot the name of it though. Anyone know? They had tons of brands listed on the side of the building.
