I'm planning to do some DR comparisons of some lossless CD rips I've made using EAC and the 24-bit downloads from HDTracks.

Specifically I'm about to buy last year's Toto 40th anniversary best-of which I see is available on HDTracks at 24/96.

Apologies if not on-topic, but couldn't find this elsewhere on the forum - What are the favored tools for me to do this measurement, and how do we like to present the data?

I have Pro Tools 12, Nuendo 8, iZotope Insight 5, and Waves WLM Plus. So many options. Want to share but not sure what's most helpful.

I believe most people use the freeware Foobar2000 as you can select it to produce a log of it's DR analysis. That log is usually posted when people upload data to the Dynamic Range database and here.

For jazz fans -> Joe Henderson's "State of the Tenor Vol 2" (96/24) is available at HDTracks for around $10.00 (get an additional 20% off with HDMAYFLOWERS ). CD versions are expensive.

The price may be a mistake so if you are interested, get over there and... :)

I'm seeing those sale prices at ProStudioMasters. Might have to pick up a few myself.

Are all these HD albums pretty much confirmed to be the real deal and not upsampled from CD resolution? I know it was a problem with certain titles and in the past, but has this problem persisted or is it really now a thing of the past?

I would think the sites selling this stuff would now check it carefully before it’s offered up for download but you know how it is sometime.

I haven't encountered a "truly" upsampled album in years now. It never was widespread and it is still very rare. In fact I cannot even remember what was the last upsampled title I stumbled upon.

Yes. Listened once but not paying close attention. Reserving judgement.

ProstudioMasters is pretty good at posted the technical mastering details. Just click on the album and choose the technical button. What is nice is that you can listen to the samples AND choose the other options. I really like the site.

I didn't measure it myself, but I've read (I think on this forum) that the hi-res files for the latest McCartney album, Egypt Station, is upsampled from CD resolution for all except one of its tracks.

I haven't followed this controversy, but it's probably 24bit/44.1kHz recordings mastered in higher res, and not an upsample of the CD.
NEW was also mastered from a variety of sources/resolutions.

Toto albums in hi-res with out a crap-tastic peak limited mastering would be amazing :)
    Edit:
And also without that brightness that seems to be the new fad. (Fleetwood Mac/Eurythmics)

Yea I fully agree. I have pre-ordered the box set from the UK for a low price of $53 shipped here to USA. I would cancel that if I knew the Hi Res was more dynamic than the CD's that are not that dynamic but supposedly still sound very good.

IMO, the entire Warner 2011-2014 flat transfer series on HDT which includes all the Joni's other than 1 that was taken from a dvd-a (unless they were newly remastered for PSM and are different then the ones I have) are stunning.

Glad to have found this thread; 24 bit has been my sonic obsession since I bought my Oppo in 2011. Very sadly, based on the lack of releases, the trend to 44/24, & the dreadful MQA's, hr seems to be getting killed off by the labels.

This is the first time that I've read any indication about the methodology used for the Joni Mitchel hi-res downloads with any certainty. Not that I doubt you, but how do you know these are flat transfers? I've read speculation that these use the same mastering as the original CDs (prior to the remasterings used for the HDCDs). Would love to get confirmation that these are indeed newer flat transfers.
