it depends on what your main thing is.
Personally I think Human Frailty is the best starting point, if you want it more raw, go earlier, if you want it more polished roll ahead to Ghost Nation.
At the top of this page there is an index to quick pick some tunes. I'd have a quick listen to some of the stuff on Jaws of Life, Human Frailty and Ghost Nation and see if anything clicks with you.

Just for the record, the first four albums are quite different from each other. You can see/hear a connection/progression, but if you went from the first album to the fourth album, you may almost think they were a different band.

There early stuff was inspired by Krautrock (of which i am not very well versed to be honest). The first album was self produced, but the next two were produced by Konrad Plank, who I am told is quite well known.
My favourite album of theirs "Human Frailty" was produced by Gavin MacKillop and the band.

 

“Human Frailty” is also my favourite but thanks to your thread, I am enjoying a lot more Hunters & Collectors.

I picked up both Jaws and Ghost Nation. Haven't really gotten into the earlier one yet, but Ghost Nation is great

 

Cool. Yea Jaws is somewhat more abstract. If you like Ghost Nation, it may pay to give Human Frailty a listen, it walks the ground between the two and is really well composed and arranged.

Its easily the most recognisable Hunters track in contemporary Australia - in part due to its use as an Australian football anthem. Goes well for the music/image highlights packages on TV. I really do like it.

 

I get the feeling that they got sick of the producer telling them why their songs weren't going to be hits so they wrote a song that was nothing but hooks. There not being a demo version on the deluxe edition seems to confirm this.

 

You're right - its wall to wall hooks. Very hummable. I still have the cass-single somewhere.
