I shouldn't have clicked on this thread - have spent the last 20+ minutes trying to figure this one out, damnit!

  2. Are we sure it’s not a country artist doing a pop record? There were people like Dickey Lee and others doing things somewhat along these lines at the time.

Someone needs to re-record this (and writing the other 3:00 of the song) and release it keeping all the songwriting credits. If no one come forth to challenge it, you win. If they do, question answered! :)

The voice. It is an outtake. Paul did a *hitload of film & TV-theme music work in the 7Os and a lot of it never got issued, some because the shows got cancelled after the pilot before going to series.

It's Mouth from Mouth and Macneal.
He went solo looking for that elusive follow-up hit to ' How Do You Do '
He never found it and became a used car salesman in Calgary, Alberta.

Is there any particular reasoning behind the idea it's him?

But how would an outtake have been taped off the radio back in the 70's?

  10. The guitar work/tone sounds a lot like this, and there’s a song on this album called “Sometimes” - does anybody have this Mushroom album? A long shot, but just asking.

"Sometimes" was also released as a single in 1977.

It was a song that got some airplay, but never became a hit, so it can't be found on lyric sites or song match apps like Shazam.

There are aspects of it that remind me of songs by Jackson Browne (piano style), BW Stevenson, and Harry Chapin. All of those guys had songs that were covered by others, some that were never on their own albums. The previously mentioned Paul Williams might be possible, too. Or just some artist or band influenced by the types of songwriters of that era.

I am wondering if it's from a VCR recording. It sounds like the kind of cheesy song that would play during the closing credits of a 1970's B movie.

The guy who recorded it swears that it was a full song. He says he just didn't get to be able to record it until it was almost finished.

  16. Are we absolutely sure this isn’t fake? Despite the bad quality I’d expect to hear some kind of vinyl noise at the end given the huge amount of limiting involved. I know in my AM radio days any soft/single instrument or vocal sections always had a bit of rumble or groove noise heard in the on air signal.

Sometimes by Mushroom can be ruled out. Someone checked it out and it's not the song we're looking for. Thanks again for the suggestions

I feel pretty comfortable in ruling out Harry Chapin. It does sound like his style, but I'm pretty sure I'd know about this song if he'd written it (and it's definitely not him singing it).

Maybe it was the quality, but I'd hang on to the link, because it's been helpful with every song I've tried.

Sounds like early 70s CCM.....or early Jesus people rock if you will.

The original recorder seems to think it's unlikely. But then again his mixtape also had Poco on it, so it's still a possibility that it could be from a christian rock band.
