Can you please recommend some modern artists for me? My most recent find was Betty Davis and she is not current. As far as current acts, I'd say I'm really into Mayer Hawthorne, Kendrick Lamar, and D'Angelo at the moment. I don't care what genre.

    I like:
    Melodies
    Rhythm
    "Swagger"
    real instruments
    dirty guitars.

    I do not like:
    whiny singers
    emasculated sounds.
    computer sounds.
    moody music.
bands with like 9 members in them.

I'm a huge Prince and Cat Power fan, so if you can find a female singer who did her make up as well as Prince, I'd probably buy it.

    thanks!

I would suggest buying a copy of "Mystery Train" and working my way through the whole book (if you haven't already done so), the only thing that is somewhat hard to find is the Harmonica Frank stuff, and not a clunker among them, all great stuff...
I am currently picking stuff out of the Penguin Guide to Jazz, in no special order...

Definitely get "Marquee Moon" by Television. The dual guitars are dynamic with great counterpointed weaves and knots that create melodies and counter-melodies. Tom Verlaine's eclectic themes and smart, cynical lyrics incorporate puns and double entendres which help make this album more than just an aural experience where one focuses solely on the music. There's a bit of swagger in his tone.

The new Wolf People Ruins album is very cool, kind of like a trip back to the time of Jethro Tull Songs from the Wood, but heavier and a little dirtier, maybe add some Led Zep in the mix, kind of like that amazing Comus First Utterance from back then, but not quite as medieval. Heavy psych folk rock, think maybe a mix of Fairport Convention and Black Sabbath, with some nice dual guitar riffage :)
