The walls are usually thin most hotels I've been in never mind motels. Most tv's are wall mounted, large flat screens I usually have the volume down while watching the news reading the text, though turned up if the couple next door are fighting or bed action. I had to move twice in one place as there was a party going on( like my beauty sleep :D).

Good thought! Halfway through the movie I started thinking. “Is video-like definition the reason all Telemundo actors seem so horrible?”

It’s called the “dream factory,” not the “reality factory.”

I mean I know the rules the TV needs to be properly set up yada yada yada but every super 4K Blu-ray I’ve ever seen looks like “the days of our lives” to me and I hate it.

    Turn off the following:

    Dynamic Contrast
    Super Resolution
    Color Filter
    NR
    MPEG NR
    Real Cinema
    Motion Eye Care
    TruMotion

Anything that says "motion" in it... turn it off. I would generally turn Enhancement off as well.

If you leave these automatic controls on, you stand even less of a chance of seeing the film as the filmmaker intended than you would otherwise. 4K can look great provided the display is properly set up; without that, all is lost.

Does your TV's picture look too real? You can get rid of that 'soap opera effect'

Pretty much what I said in far fewer words yesterday ;)

"Yup just turn off every user-'aid' there is. The same as you should do when you get into a performance car."

I usually just say: "turn off all the automatic crap, and you'll generally get a more honest picture." But NR is in there, too.

It also helps to hire somebody to come over and calibrate the sets to known SMPTE or ITU standards. Out of the box, even with the automatics off, they're generally wrong.

I've got a Spyder, a few THX set up discs and a blu-ray calibration disc which manage to get my TVs pretty acceptable.

Daedalus I haven't heard it all.....

I haven’t seen this technology yet but I noticed with Blu-ray movies-the high resolution makes everything look phony. Actors in a set-no illusion. Give me old black and white movies in low tech!

I thought the Revenant had a pretty scary bear attack. It fooled me. The whole film was pretty seamless to my eyes. I pove black and white...but I also appreciate this lifelike 65mm georgeous masterpiece.

It’s the videotape problem. Acting on video looks bad but the same performance captured on film comes across as good. Black and white was also known as the actors friend. 4K probably looks too much like videotape. There’s an immediacy to it that looks bad and artificial while the grain of film adds stature and mystery.

    4K digital you mean?

There have been arguments about too much grain because of what 4K "reveals"...now it is like videotape?

I never took videotape to be anything but a paired down version of film because that is exactly what it is.

4K captures the most film like experience I have ever seen at home.

I think a lot of this artificial look is being blamed because of bad tv settings.

The first thing I did was like others said...turn off the pricessing crap on your 4K TV and watch the detail flow...and tgat includes old films with great scans that upscale really nice.

Motels certainly don't have 4k, but Hotels probably do.

Sadly this is all easier said than done now.

We bought a big LG OLED screen several months ago and it took me seemingly forever to fiddle around in the menus and finally find and disable the “soap opera” feature. I knew exactly what was wrong but the designers made it an impossibility complicated maze. Wtf. So idiotic.

On my LG (2018 model) all the picture options are in one menu, you just have to open up the 'Advanced' option. There was virtually nothing turned on by default anyway.

The OS on the LGs is a bit quirky but that wasn't one of the things I had a problem with.
