Hi all..10 years ago I did a U2 songs tourney similar to the one currently running here on SHF. I really enjoyed doing it and I have been thinking for some time of running a new updated contest (including all the new material released since). However, the forum I did it on seems to have disbanded (it was a sizeable U2 NZ fan forum). Would people be interested in it for fun?

BTW, the winner last time after weeks and weeks of rounds was 'With Or Without You' which was a shock result!

So this is how it will be done:

    Eligible Entries
    • All U2 officially released studio songs
    • One off live performances of songs on official releases (e.g. 'I Remember You' on the Sunday Times CD or 'Maggies Farm's on the Live For Ireland album.
    • Alternate recordings of existing songs e.g. Holy Joe I & II (both are completely different versions)
    • Cover versions are allowed - live or in the studio
    Not Eligible

    • Live performances of existing songs (Pride, Beautiful Day etc. etc.)
    • Remixes. Period.
I can't recall how many unique songs there were last time but what I did to then when the number didn't fit the knockout situation, I gave a random chunk of songs a bye into the next round. Did about 5 ties each every couple of days

Each match will have its own thread with a poll and after a couple of days when the deadline is passed a winner is declsred. If there's a draw, extra time and after that I decided the casting vote.

Matches are chosen completely at random so there's a good chance that big name songs could come up against each other in the first round!

Update: ignore my last post. I'd forgotten how I did this last time.

So what will happen now is there will a preliminary round of 60 matches and the winners go into Round 1 with the rest of the songs. I was hoping to start this today but I forgot to send the Excel file to where I am now and so...well, we'll aim for tomorrow! :)

Thanks for the heads up - duly changed!

BTW..if there is a tie for any of these, I'll run a one-off poll for 24 hrs - extra time! - and if we still don't have a winner I will then make a casting vote.

    *bump*

Two days to go. Looks like I might not need casting votes for the first 5 judging from the scores so far! Feel free to post alternate versions of the songs that you feel might help your choice get over the line.

Next five are already lined up & ready to go for Saturday (my time).

By the way, is there anyway we can change the title of this thread to be the general admin for the tourney? Gorts?

    Winners for this set:

Holy Joe (Guilty Mix) (v One Minute Warning - 11-7)
One (Baby Version) (v Ordinary Love - 15-6)
    Trying To Throw... (v Salome - 17-10)
    Zooropa (v Touch - 22-6)
Every Breaking Wave (v Little Things [Neptunes] - 15-5)

Analysis - Surprised that Ordinary Love & Salome went so easily, especially the former. I thought that if people wanted to wait to vote for the final version of 'One' turn up here, then OL might get an easy pass in that regard but no, you all must love that song in any form! Salome I though had a good chance of getting through given that it was pitched against one of the weakest songs on AB but there you go. Next five are on their way!

I agree with your analysis of Ordinary Love and Salomé. It's especially sad in the case of Ordinary Love, as there seem to be at least three versions of One competing. So is an alternative version really necessary?

    Winners for the next set:

Raised by Wolves [Acoustic] (v Beautiful Ghost.. 8-2)
Van Diemen's Land (v One [MJB version] 28-5 )
Hallelujah, Here She Comes (v The Fool 15-4)
Love Rescue Me (v Oh Berlin 9-6)
Staring At The Sun (v NLOTH 22-20)

Analysis: Well, a lot of you really hate that MJB version of 'One'! I can't stand it either so VDL got lucky here. I knew tie 10 would be close - both strong songs on their respective albums. Almost shocked how close 'Oh Berlin' nearly sneaked into Round 1. It was 8-2 behind at the halfway mark so very close with its late comeback.

I'll post the next set of matches soon.

Sad to see NLOTH gone already before the tournament proper has even started. That is a very strong song. It deserved much more. :(

And the new batch also has some tough ones (maybe not tough in the voting sense, but of great songs not even entering the tournament).
