There was a nursery there where the nannies smoked spliffs and listened to reggae constantly which of course had a big influence on both lads.

I read back in the 90's that "Some People Never Know" was from the last 60's and it's possible the genesis of "Wild Life" started in Nov.'66 when he went to Africa (which is referenced in the song).

Didn't the Moody Blues support the Beatles on their winter 65 UK tour? I'm sure there was photos in the Beatles Book with them all having dinner?

Yes, they did open for the Beatles in late 1965. Here's the photo again (first posted back in post #59):

Denny first met The Beatles in 1963 when he was in Denny Laine and the Diplomats.

“Wild Life” is pure blues, both in its repetitive chord structure (apart from the little acoustic intro, the whole song is based on the same three chords: F, B flat and G minor)

Shouldn't the chords be Cmin - Bb6 - F9 or have my ears heard it wrong all these years?

Of course he is, he's sitting on the tree...next to Linda - he's got on red plaid trousers - rolled up to below his knees. His head is turned towards Linda and he has a blue long sleeve shirt on.

Very good summary of Wildlife...I find I get in the mood to hear it and play it many times in a row. The harder side (1) and more mellow side (2). I think Bip Bop and Mumbo are classic hippy rocking...I am glad he had the guts to put it out there! I also "dig" the artwork, and sleeve notes. It makes me think of summer and relaxing. I think Linda's casual pose on the cover with no make-up is really pretty and fitting with rest of the band - and the times.

I love cheesy promo pictures like this, with the drummer stuck banging on one floor tom, and the alternating light, dark ,light, dark coat placement, etc.,

December 8, 1965 to be exact. Classic photo of two of the greatest bands out of England. And yes, that's Denny next to Ringo and Clint Warwick, the Moody Blues bass player, in front of him. Also, good spot up on Alf Bicknell, the Beatles' chauffeur during their touring years. This photo is an after dinner shot from the hotel the Beatles were staying at in Sheffield after both groups had played at the Gaumont Cinema earlier in the day. Mike Pinder, the Moodies' famed mellotronmeister, is to the left of John in the photo. He's the guy who turned the Beatles onto the mellotron (he was also a good friend to Lennon).

Great write-up Luca. The 'blues band' angle is interesting.

You call Love Is Strange a 'reggae break' from the blues-based material on Side One, but it's bluesy enough to me, having been co-written by Bo Diddley (under a pseudonym). The song is very similar to another Bo song (in overall structure, chord progression, the 'yeah yeahs'). Paul could have easily sung this one over the Love Is Strange backing track instead:

Of course, Paul did record Crackin' Up later in his career, as did the Rolling Stones live in 1977, who gave it a similar reggae feel.

Thanks Slane. Yes, you're right also this track has some blues connection...I called it reggae break mainly for the flavor of the arrangement but I agree with your contribution.

I had no idea. Yet another reason why I wish there was a definite solo McCartney biography written in the style of Mr. Lewisohn.
