I love Jackie Chan and I see he seems to be sorely under-represented here.

Is anyone a fan? Any stories or memories you wish to share? Any favorite film moments you want to reminisce on?

Supercop (aka Police Story III) and Drunken Master II are out of this world!

I have probably a dozen Jackie Chan movies, and haven't watched any in several years. I totally need to. The most recent one I saw was actually a serious action drama called The Foreigner from 2017.

I have a huge respect for the guy, doing his own stunts while breaking every bone in his body...dedicated man!
His movies are a great fun and I even remember when they filmed Armour of God. I was a kid and it happened in Predjama castle.
    It needs a rewatch!

The Foreigner was really good even though it was quite different in tone from his usual fare.

Like Arnold Schwarzenegger, if he wants to keep working, he has to find something to do other than action.

He's probably the planet's #1 movie star of the past 40 years.

As to why we don't hear as much about him now, he is a senior citizen, so presumably it's harder to film action films.

What's nice about Chan's lower-budget films (i.e., most of them) is that they're usually quite enjoyable even if they're objectively kind of weak. Jackie is so charming and is always fun to watch. I mean, a movie like The Tuxedo is artistically terrible, but it's still more fun to watch than most high-budget, even critically acclaimed, films.

My only reservation about Chan is how he made a clear decision at some point -- maybe in the mid-90s or something, when he was becoming institutionally iconic across the Chinese world -- that he was going to be a mouth-piece and uncritical supporter of the PRC. This alone wouldn't be unique among Chinese stars, of course (hard to say anything negative about your government if the result is the end of your career, overnight), but what kind of leaves a smell for me is Chan's tendency to say really nasty things about Taiwan or other territories politically cut off from the mainland. It's pretty classless.

Anyway, fantastic star, incredible life and career.

I listen to his albums all the time, or at least every once in a while. I just put on 我還是成龍 last week. I can't remember the last time I saw one of his movies.

I was also wondering how long he could keep going. I was amazed at his stunt work in Bleeding Steel (2017). Worth checking out.

Big fan, but "Supercop" is still my favorite, mainly because Jackie and Michelle Yeoh are
simply amazing in it. In fact it really is a Jackie/Michelle co star film.
There are a ton of clips online from the film, but this outtake video sums up a lot of it.
And yes, Michelle Yeoh DID do that motorcycle onto the train stunt herself (amazing) but
as you can see in this clip, she wasn't always successful doing it. I don't know how she
wasn't killed, but she lived to talk about it....Amazing woman and today a great actress.

Rewatching The Protector now. The absolutely absurd cop film. The second half is more grounded and serious though.

One thing is certain, this is Jackie at his most sinister. His most "tough guy" role ever. It's interesting how this tough guy Jackie was never revisited again. He became more of a "Mr. Nice Guy" to borrow the movie title.

The Protector is currently streaming on Pluto TV.

  17. The Foreigner is a very enjoyable movie, and Jackie Chan is making a fairly good transition into age limited action films.

Not a big fan of these types of movies, but always liked Jackie's stunts, and he seems like a very likeable guy.

Watching Dragons Forever (1988) with Jackie and Sammo Hung tonight.

All the elements were here marking Jackie as the future world star he was about to become.

    Currently streaming on Paramount+

Sammo should have deserved the same. He did get the Martial Law TV show though which I enjoyed a lot.

Jackie squared off on screen against Benny Urquidez twice ("Dragons Forever" and "Wheels on Meals") and they are two of the greatest fights ever put on screen. Both films also feature Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, so there is plenty to recommend beyond just those fights, too

Armour Of God is a great one, often overlooked. The Protector is good if a bit cheesy in places.
