No doubt the KEF stand has a speaker base plate much larger than after market stands that must work for all sizes of speakers. My after market stands has a much smaller base plate and I feel the speaker is stable however if you have small children or pets that could bang into the speaker/stand the larger plate and one in which you bolt the speaker down is well worth the upgrade cost. As someone mentioned it is very easy to bolt/screw a larger base plate onto the smaller and then bolt the KEF to that larger plate. It would just take some wood or metal, black paint and fasteners. This would save a lot of money.
I'm happy to report that I just closed a deal on a lightly-used set of REf 1s. I pick them up tonight! Very excited. Will report back with listening impressions.
Piano black. Private sale found on US Audio Mart, guy lives 15 minutes from me! $4500 including the official Kef stands. I think I got a good deal. They are in great cosmetic condition. Won't get a chance to listen until the weekend though. These puppies are big and heavy for stand-mounts.
Hi @Echoes Myron, do I just remove the top plate of the stand and pour the sand in? Did you line the stand with plastic or anything to prevent the sand escaping? Thanks.
The LS50s actually go for closer to $1,000. I paid $999 for mine six months ago. Given the price, they seem hard to beat. I've yet to hear anything for the same price or less that I like more.
Yes, remove the top plate and pour in dry playground sand with a funnel. Fill the compartments to the top. The bottom is tight enough to hold it in. And congrats that is an awesome deal!
Congrats on your purchase. What an absolute steal! I think you're going to be pretty happy with them.
Photos attached. They look in almost-perfect condition. Pool sand arriving Saturday to fill the stands. Listening Saturday evening if all goes to plan!
Good eye! That wasn’t “posed” I promise! Just happened to be there. Cool how Nick’s arm is reflected in the side of the speaker cabinet. Great album and great sounding album too.
agreed. the Live from KCRW recording from that era sounds incredible too. good luck with the new speakers
Well they’re set up and I’m listening to Get Lucky from Random Access Memories by Daft Punk. Holy moly! It’s a whole other league compared to the LS50s! Everything I loved about them in terms of resolution and imaging, but a dramatically fuller and smoother and bigger soundstage. The bass is amazing, lots of it but it’s tight and accurate. Wow!!!!
