Kenny Rogers & The First Edition 15 Greatest Hits on eBay

The CD I purchased arrived in the post, Monday, Nov.17.

I haven't seen a long box or a CD with a delete hole punch, since my days in music retail in the early 1990s. (The hole is at the bottom right on the letter C.)



CD sounds OK. You can hear tape hiss. Sometime I'll have to compare the mastering of "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" to the version I have on the Rhino Even More Nuggets Vol. 3 CD. This MCA disc in 4 places lists the song as "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is In)".

 

Great comments. I'd rather hear tape hiss over no-noise and OK sound is better than poor sound.

The reason why the gambler isn't on this comp as that isn't a First Edition recording.

This is some truly essential country, psychedelic rock and country-rock music for anybody into the music of the 1960s in any genre. If you want more than just the hits compiled on this disc and all other comps, pick up some Reprise LPs if you come across any in decent shapes.

 

As I mentioned, this CD is essentially an expanded edition of the Reprise Greatest Hits vinyl comp from 1971 (5 bonus tracks):

I had this on MCA cassette in the 90's, mastered by Glenn Meadows--same cover as the CD. Some of the tracks were clearly needledrops.

Listen to the intro of "Something's Burning"....it's obvious.

 

I agree that some of the tracks were clearly needle drops.

Turns out the cassette and the CD must have used different sources. I played both last night, and while the MCA cassette is clearly full of needledrops, the CD that Bradley points us to above is all from tape sources. Same cover, same Glenn Meadows mastering credit, but the CD is a winner.

 

In other words, the CD version of this title is a bargain.

 

There is a used copy on eBay right now. Garrett, get rid of the cassette and keep the CD version.

If you want the longbox, ask the seller first if the item is still sealed. I ordered two copies the last time this seller had these for sale, and was only sent one. The explanation I received was that the remaining copies he/she had were opened by staff members and the longboxes discarded, and only opened copies remained.

Excellent sounding CD. I played my Japan-for-US copy the other day when there was an active thread on the song "Something's Burning".
