King Curtis (Memphis Soul Stew) was murdered 32 years ago today.
I believe he was working on a Sam Moore (Sam and Dave) solo album at the time.
If you have never heard it; his Fillmore West album is amazing as is his backing work on Arethas Fillmore West album
    Rest in peace King Curtis

What a major talent and a terrible tragedy (but, aren't they all?). Those two albums are essential to any reasonable collection.

King played sax in John Lennon's Imagine (It's so Hard) too (right before he died).

There is a cool piece of tape from this session that circulates among collectors. It's a dialogue between John and K.C. in which John is trying to explain the sound he wants. John (sweetly) addresses him as "King" at one point.

In fact, I just checked - it's on the "Imagine: All The Outtakes" box on Vigotone (yes, a bootleg.)

I agree that BOTH of the Fillmore West albums are essential, as is the SH-mastered compilation on Razor & Tie, which I think is now out of print.
