And if you've got stuff as poppy as Go-Gos, Motels, and Three O'Clock how about some pre-Bangles:

Yeah, I thought about using this before - but you reminded me of how good it is, so I just added it to my playlist. Unfortunately, I can't edit my initial post.

OK, you're right, the version on the No Thanks box is the 45 mix. I was listening on my iTunes to the version on The Record and then playing the No Thanks CD. Not realizing that I had already imported the No Thanks version and replaced the LP version without changing the title. Does that make sense? LOL Anyway, I moved that song to 1978 on my playlist which you can't see now because I can't edit my first post.

Also, I forgot to type them in, but TSOL's "Soft Focus" and "Wash Away" from the Beneath the Shadows album are included for 1982.

My favorite location/time period of punk rock! Yeah, I'm a weirdo.

Could use Problem Child by Wasted Youth, I've Got A Date by The Simpletones or Cover Girls by The Klan, but a fantastic selection nonetheless. Maybe some Crowd too.

Great list. Only thing that I can add is the Plugz "Achin'", the a-side of "La Bamba", and their first single on Slash, "Move". Also, the Vertebrats "Left In The Dark"(personal favorite) that came out in 1981 on Voxx's "Battle Of The Garages".

I am so thankful for this thread and what perfect timing. I was just trying to figure out how to compile a playlist for the L.A. scene for this time period and even a little later. (The Pandoras, Phast Phreddie & Thee Precisions, Thelonious Monster, etc.)

    Great work.

Not to quibble but was Scandal an L.A. based band? Thought they were an NYC band.

Hey Trainspotting, I've got both books you mentioned and think they are great.

Since you like those, you might also want to check out these two:

"We Got the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of L.A. Punk" by Marc Spitz and Brendan Mullen
This covers a lot of the same bands as the Doe/DeSavia books.

"A Wailing Of A Town: An Oral History of Early San Pedro Punk And More 1977-1985" by Craig Ibarra
This covers the South Bay and heavily features these bands from your playlist: The Last, Black Flag, Minutemen, Descendents, Salvation Army

No, quibble away. I post this stuff so I can perfect/refine it. You're right about Scandal. Don't know why I thought they were from LA. Just deleted the song from the playlist. Too bad one can't edit a post after a short period of time here at the Hoffman site. I can on other sites I frequent. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Yeah, I've got the We Got the Neutron Bomb book and have read it. I can't seem to find it at the moment though. I never throw away my rock books, so I must have it somewhere... Haven't read the Pedro book. A friend of mine, Richard Derrick, passed away this year and he was from Pedro. He lived with D. Boon in the eighties and played at least one show as a drummer with the Minutemen.

I mentioned in another thread a while back that Middle Class was one of earliest Hardcore bands (maybe only preceded by the Germs), then switched to Post Punk when everybody else was doing Hardcore. They made one great Post Punk album called Homeland in 1982, then broke up.

    "Shaken"

Yeah, when you play the comp and that song comes up it sounds great. Definitely ahead of their time.

Geez, nobody (including me) even noticed that the end of my 1982 list includes the first songs on my 1983 list. The Minutemen and Youth Brigade tracks are from '83. I combined both books and did an entire 1976 - 1987 comp. 282 songs. When I was typing today I was looking at my iPod for the songs and couldn't see the years. Now that I can see them on my computer I can tell that the last five songs are from 1983. The 1982 list should have stopped after Missing Persons.

Will you be posting the 1983 - 1987 list or have you already? Very curious to see what it contains.
