Left channel keeps cutting in and out, but only with records.

I'm using an H.H. Scott 130 and a Dual CS 5000. First thought would be the turntable, but I was having the same problem when my 1218 was in this system.

I reversed the connectors, but the problem stayed in the left channel.

I used the second turntable jacks, and the problem persists, so not a bad jack issue.

I switch to CD and there is no problem.

    Thoughts?

Was going to say check your cartridge wires, but you said it's not the turntable. Have you tried a different set of interconnects? Oh you said you reversed those and it remains in the left? Sounds like a problem with the left phono jack on your amp. Try a separate pre-amp, or just plug your TT into aux or CD and see if you can hear the left channel.

    Disconnect turntable interconnect

Plug in right channel(red) to right channel.
Sound? Good. Right channel from turntable working)
    Remove right channel interconnect from
    Right channel phono connector.
Now plug in LEFT phono interconnect.
    Into right channel

This will be interesting. If you again, have
Sound then we have confirmed both
    Channels of turntable are fine.
Now, things get interesting as the other amplifier, ( i assume the 1218 is another amp) exhibited same symptoms.
Conduct another test, this time using left
    Channel of amp
I feel this is the problem.
Possibly phono plug is not compatible on left channel.
Ie the centre pin of rca plug is not making contact with mating end of socket.
    Good luck
    .

The selector switch may need a Deoxit treatment. :)

    1218 is another Dual turntable.

And I’d agree about the socket, but the 130 has two sets of phono ins and the problem was in both.

Possible tube with a short? Not been that long since I pulled and tested them, but I guess when they go they go.

Have you tried another set of RCA cables?

Do both turntable inputs use the same internal phono pre in your amp? Maybe the problem is in that part of the system?

Its well worth changing the tube associated with that part of circuit.
My cd player uses ecc82 on output
Stage. Recently i lost one channel.

I fitted a new one and all was well
Fault if not in turntable will be in the amp.
    An inspection may reveal more.
Some preamps use plug in boards.
Could be dirty connector, or resistor.
Caps may be burnt or swollen.
    Work systematically.
Maybe an option to get amp
    Serviced.
My leak was serviced 15 years ago.
    Works superbly now

I had the same issue. It was a tube that was the culprit. Right channel was going in and out. Popped a new tube in and it was back to normal

Its likely in the selector switch(es). Clean with contact cleaner and re-test. One way to test would be to get an external phono preamp and plug it into the inputs that the CD is in now.
