Yeah, they should have made it "I sailed a notion, unsettled ocean" in the first verse and "I wrest the waters, fight Neptune's daughters" in the second. Easy fix.

Very nice album. Almost up there with my favorites. Love particularly Al Jardine's California Saga.

The lyrics are mostly by Van Dyke Parks and you should ask him. He is very active on Twitter.
    In the third verse:

I work the seaways, the gale-swept seaways
Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters
    Uninspired, drenched and tired
    Wail on, wail on, sailor

Past shipwrecked daughters of wicked waters.
Much better than your line, in my opinion.

I wonder what the story behind the Mike/Carl/Ricky/Blondie cowrite on Leaving This Town was? Neither Carl or Mike are credited on the back sleeve under their photos, but they are on the label. Far as I know, there's no Mike/Carl exclusive cowrites (which seems like a HUGE missed opportunity) so I wonder if this was a Ricky/Blondie song which Carl and Mike added to, or a Carl/Mike song when it started?

Also one of the reasons I love this and So Tough is the diversity of collaborations- Mike and Dennis, for example. Just a shame Bruce (who's on both albums as an uncredited backing singer) didn't stick around to add to the mix.

Love this album. Unfortunately I bought it on 8track:unhunh:. I have it on CD but I can't wait for the AP version. Yes in my view definitely underrated.

To me it's a great album, all of it, including Mt. Vernon and Fairway which admittedly I didn't play as much when it came out but is still a part of the whole. It has that feeling of something beautiful from chaos. I so much wish they had carried on this way. I think it's probably better that We Got Love was left off the final tracklist.

I never liked those Caribou releases. They have a kind of muffled, dark sound about them. The Capitol/Brother Sandoval remasters sound much better to my ears; Like a layer of grime was lifted off. As with everything, YMMV.

An organic masterpiece. My favorite chill-out Beach Boys listen.

Agreed. Still flawed but much more relaxed sounding imo.

True story--my niece was about to get married a couple years back to a wonderful young guy (musician and Beach Boys fan). He told me proudly he was going to sing "Forever" at the reception; I asked if he had ever heard "Only With You." He hadn't, so I sent it to him. Guess what he sang at the wedding? Such a great great love song--Carl is magical as always.

I love the Holland album. Great on head phones, as is Carl and the Passions. My main listening. They effortlessly integrated the most "white" of US bands, with no fanfare or self congratulating publicity. I wish Blondie and Ricky had stayed. Them leaving was a big setback creatively.

Agreed! I loved what they added to the band (especially Blondie).

I went to see Brian Wilson in the fall of 2015 (Blondie was a "special guest"). On the drive to the event, I told my wife that I was thrilled to have a chance to see Blondie (someone who I never expected to have a chance to see).

Seeing Blondie was the highlight of my evening. During Blondie's featured segment, a drunk, aggressively loud "fan" booed Blondie with every ounce of energy that he had. He repeatedly screamed "get the f*** off the stage" at the top of his lungs. I scowled at him. Once I got his attention I asked him WTF his problem was. Here was his answer: "I came to see Brian Wilson... not some homeless guy who walked in off the street. I want to hear Beach Boy music". I aggressively informed him that I came to see Blondie..... as well as the rest of Brian's band. Tensions were quite high.

I asked him if he knew that Blondie was a Beach Boy. He replied, "No". It turns out that he had never heard of "Sail on Sailor". The ignorant fan responded that his buddy sitting next to him was the "world's biggest Beach Boy fan" and that his buddy "never heard of him either".

I didn't expect to encounter knuckle-draggers at a Brian Wilson concert.

Security was nowhere to be seen.

Thankfully, he stopped screaming after our interaction.

This is exactly what I have against those Beach Boys fans, FAT geezers in old Hawaï shirts...

Wow, thanks a lot, there! When did you see me with an Hawaiian shirt on? It must have been fairly recently, because I've only put on a little weight (what you call FAT) in the last year or so. I've been to close to 60 Beach Boys/Brian Wilson shows since 1969 and not once did I ever attend a show in an Hawaiian shirt.

The HR download includes We got love which is nice. Love the music, ok Brian's fairy tale is hard to listen to repeatedly, just wished the album sounded better. Pretty murky, IMO.

  23. Love Holland, now when the hell are the remainder of the AP releases coming out? And that goes for the Kinks releases too..

This is the reason many of us have stopped going to live shows, even when hero geniuses are in town.

  25. I think you're confusing Beach Boys fans with Jimmy Buffet fans but there's nothing wrong with wearing Hawaiian shirts. There's nothing wrong with being a geezer either.
