Depends on the piece. A brief generalisation..... For Sibelius - Vanska (Lahti or Minnesota), for Beethoven - Herbie, Vanska, Leibowitz, Barenboim, for Brahms and Dvorak - Dohnanyi, Tchaikovsky - Mravinsky.

I have seen recordings by Vanska around but know nothing about him other than he is with the MN Symphony ...

I like Vanska a lot, you should have a listen. Add the fact he records for BIS - so the recordings have really great sound.

I have some recordings by the MN Orchestra directed by Dorati and Marriner but they are older recordings ...

I've got this terrific recording also but for me it's lack of an English translation of the libretto is a major impediment to appreciation.

Do you read German @StarThrower62 ?

The infamous Telarc 1812 with the live cannons.... found at Goodwill the other day for $1.29, WITH the included paperwork. I have another Goodwill copy of this without said paperwork. This one is in NM condition on the vinyo and plays great.

BTW my GT-2000L w/ DL-103R seems to track the cannon shots just fine, contrary to the myth that there's only one TT in the world owned by some billionaire in Japan who lives in the clouds and sprinkles his TT with magical fairy dust :). I think the TT's that have trouble coping are typically ones with low / light EM tonearms... the GT-2000 has a 22g EM so heavy-ish, but there of course are heavier.

Anyone have any recommendations on some lesser known classical Halloween music? I know about Symphonie Fantastique, Hansel and Gretel, Danse Macabre, Night on Bald Mountain, and several of the "popular" ones. I have the Living Stereo release of "Witches Brew", and it has a few lesser known ones. So, any and all suggestions welcome.
