Both. Even though it was overkill, I bought the deluxe box as a beautiful collector's item.

It's "I can't feel my feet cold" out, I should have come in earlier; cold air cutting through my helmet at high speed... nothing beats that feeling :) Now listening to Ansermet, Berlioz's Les Nuits and Symphonie Fantastique.

I've also brought this Backhaus live release from Carnegie Hall with me. Backhaus live reminds me more of his mono cycle. But I have not listened to any of it yet, hopefully this evening after... Pats head to the Superbowl!

IKEA generally has stores in the burbs or second-tiered cities where the real estate prices are lower ...

    Not SACD?

I must have skipped over this CD as I generally do not like recordings with works by multiple composers ...

What a great pianist, one of the all-time greats. Listening to his recording brought back much nostalgia as he was the first and for a period of time my most sought after pianist on the Philips label, my favorite record label, going back some four decades. Brendel came in second but at this point, I have more recordings by S. Richter and Arrau than any other pianists ...

@J.A.W. I know you are a fan of Arrau and own this Complete Philips Recordings box. Are you a fan of Brendel as well?

My hands out stretched I can see the physiological nervous tremor, stomach is uneasy. One hour from kick off, some Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition on piano played by Cherkassky to soothe the nerves :)

I have many versions of these works. IMHO, the version by Karajan is absolutely the worst, the tempos are way off. I have owned this trio since the 90's and the box has been OOP for years though the Karajan DG mega box probably has the CD's. I am shocked to see a 5-star rating, 5 for 5 for this box on Amazon US, speaking of low information classical music listeners ...

The 30+ year old recordings (issued as 3 separate recordings) by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert are still the gold standard. IMO, there may be some newer recordings that have come close but none has surpassed it.

Care to share your thoughts @J.A.W. ?

    I think you couldn't care less ;)

I'm not really into classical singing, but I admit that Ms Kirkby is excellent.
