Now playing the following CD, which just arrived today for a first listen. Expectation has been reasonably high as it was Bernstein conducting the NYPO during its golden age when Bernstein was still its director ... Below was the first Wagner recording I added to my classical music collection ...
A little late-night Bach with Trevor Pinnock on harpsichord. These are the Toccatas BWV 411 & 413-416. Recorded in Henry Wood Hall in London, November 23-26, 1977... (Coincidentally I'm playing this just shy of 40 years ago to the day it was recorded.)
I have a few of Trevor Pinnock's Bach keyboard works on Archiv LP but am not sure about this particular one. At any rate, I have just about all his Bach recordings on CD ...
(a) that's what I meant, and entirely within their rights. SACDs cost money. (b) that box is from Challenge classics, not Channel.
Now on the turntable, "Palestrina - Canticum canticorum/Madrigali spirituali" performed by The Hilliard Ensemble on EMI Reflexe. Beautiful music and singing.
I get Channel Classics and Challenge Classics mixed up here and there as they are both niche labels ...
I finally ordered the Starker MLP box last week which I'd been waiting for a good price ($33). Starker isn't always my first choice but I do enjoy his more cerebral interpretations and love that MLP recording quality.
A fine day to be out before getting back to: Mozart, W.A. Piano Concertos 20, 21 and 1 Géza Anda and Camerata Academica des Salzburger Mozarteums Aka disc 5 of 8 of the box set. Anda has a lighter touch in #20 than Gulda DG Galleria 1975/ cd issue 1987 even if that edges on the absolute frequency extremes.
Before meal Mozart, W.A. Piano Concertos 22,23 & 3 Géza Anda and Camerata Academic des Salzburgers Mozarteums aka Disc 6 of 8 of the box set. I'm not familiar with 22 and 3 but the playing just sounds unforced to my ears.
I didn’t know that German audio company Clear Audio was in the LP business (do they do their own remastering?). This LP sounds wonderful, and of course Richter’s playing is in a class of its own. Very pricey ($45), but I guess it’s worth it.
