In Granz' later Pablo label, he released a series of very interesting duo recordings of piano and trumpet. Whether you are into Oscar Peterson or not, they are phenomenal.
While on the subject of bass duets one cannot forget two double bass recordings championed by Peter Kowald with a wide range of outstanding bassists-composers, including Maarten Altena, Barry Guy, Joëlle Léandre, Barre Phillips and William Parker. Souerbet Frereboise - with Joëlle Léandre, by PETER KOWALD
I seem to remember her did also a solo date but can't say whether it was shown on TV or I heard in in the radio. But I was impressed.
Trying to warm things up a bit around here. Listening to Antonio Carlos Jobim Verve Masters release. Very mellow stuff to ease into the day. Lots of Getz too. Temps are up in the 20s already and its time to take out the trash
Miles Davis - Miles Smiles (Mobile Fidelity UDSACD-2201) The first two Miles albums with this second great Quintet contain some of the best music ever, played by one of the best band ever. Miles Smiles is truly an amazing album ! Also, this MoFi SACD sound just perfect.
Offhand, I wonder if some bassists did something like Bill Evans "Conversations with Myself", where bass solos were overdubbed on other bass solos by the same performer. Perhaps one bowed, the other plucked. Perhaps one on a different sized bass. Ron Carter may have done this, as he loved playing a lead on piccolo bass while Buster Williams played full double bass. I may have some of these duets with myself but forgot them.
Talk about warm...my addition is still not weather sealed due to the delays in the town inspector coming to inspect the framing. We are "campers" so we are doing OK. We are just working to keep the pipes from freezing. It makes me remember the time in 1973 when Richard Nixon went on national TV to advise everyone to lower their thermostats to 55 degrees F (that's 12.7 C) all day, not just at night. When I lived in an uninsulated farmhouse with an extremely inefficient and expensive heater in that oil crisis, I kept the rooms with plumbing at 50 F (10 C), and the rest of the house was freezing. I kept myself warm by listening to jazz.
For whatever reason, my hand went to the Freddie Hubbard section on my shelf. Open Sesame, right into Hub Tones. I’m happy my hand was awake before my mind was. What a start to the day with a gorgeous morning of music.
Yet another great example. I think the notion that duets with bass are a rarity has been pretty much disproved. These are not exceptions proving a rule. Bandcamp has a two volume set of Kowald duets that were originally on various, I think, FMP releases. No Business has a two CD set of Kowald and Hemphill, whose duets with cellist Abdul Wadud were a highlight of the 80's. Joe Morris and Barre Phillips dueted for Clean Feed. It goes on...
Lovely. It somehow reminds me of a mesmerising duel of two Chinese zithers, guqin and guzheng, played by a warrior and his wife in this year's epic movie Shadow directed by Zhang Yimou. I cannot find the scene online, so its soundtrack cut needs to approximate it.
