I like to occasionally discover new Big Bands from the music scene, and I was somewhat surprised by Christian Mcbride Big Band. The sound is very modern, it flirts with the most intimate and virtuous essence of Jazz without neglecting the essential swing of big bands. There are moments that Christian flirts with the footprint of classical music, notable in his performance in "In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning". Tracks: 01 Gettin' to It (McBride) 02 Thermo (Freddie Hubbard) 03 Youthful Bliss (McBride) 04 I Thoguht About You (James Van Heusen, Johnny Mercer) 05 Sahara (McCoy Tyner) 06 Upside Down (Djavan Caetano Viana, Regina Werneck) 07 Full House (Wes Montgomery) 08 Mr. Bojangles (Jerry Jeff Walker) 09 Used 'Ta Could (McBride) 10 In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning (Bob Hilliard, David Mann) 11 Optimism (Steve Davis) Personnel Christian McBride – bass Frank Greene – lead trumpet Freddie Hendrix – trumpet Brandon Lee – trumpet Nabate Isles – trumpet Michael Dease – lead trombone Steve Davis – trombone ("Optimism") Joe McDonough – trombone (all tracks except "Optimism") James Burton – trombone Douglas Purviance – bass trombone Steve Wilson – alto, soprano sax, flute Todd Bashore – alto saxophone, flute, piccolo Ron Blake – tenor saxophone, flute Dan Pratt – tenor saxophone, clarinet Carl Maraghi – baritone saxophone, bass clarinet Xavier Davis – piano Rodney Jones – guitar ("Gettin’ to It" & "Full House") Quincy Phillips – drums Melissa Walker – vocals ("Upside Down" & "Mr. Bojangles") Brandee Younger – harp ("In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning") Anna Webber – album artwork photographer Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York City. One more and bedtime. Johnny Griffin. The Little Giant. OJC-136. 1984. USA. Nice to hear some Julian Priester on this one!
My favorite Griffin album and it has some stiff competition! NP Sonny Stitt - Stitt Plays Bird (Atlantic) blue/green stereo lp What a group. Jim Hall, John Lewis, Richard Davis and Connie Kay from 1964.
NP Cannonball Adderley Sextet - Nippon Soul (Riverside) dg black stereo label From one great alto player to another tonight. Two very different sounds to my ears. Stitt was technically very good but Cannonball had soul on top of his technical proficiency, something I value a lot. This is an excellent band too with Yusef Lateef, Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, Brother Nat and Louis Hayes.
NP Nat Adderley Quintet - On The Move (Theresa) 1983 Live at the Keystone Korner and what a hot band caught in performance at this storied club. Joining Nat are Sonny Fortune, Larry Willis, Walter Booker and Jimmy Cobb, serious pedigree. The recording is very good as well. Bonus points as my used lp has autographs by all of the members.
Off the jazz line: I was listening to David Olney, who died while performing last week. He paused, said "I'm sorry", lowered his chin and died. He wrote a song of World War I, which evoked memories of my grandfather who served in the trenches. His brother died in those trenches, which deeply affected my grandfather for the rest of his days. David's song, "1917" is from the point of view of a French prostitute, who comforted a young man who had to return to certain death in the trenches on the next day. Give a listen. My grandfather, on the left with the open smile

I got up a little while ago and realized I fell asleep in the middle of the Fed match from Aussie Open last night. I still haven't checked to see who won but he looked hurt and was getting snowballed last I remember. I was just on my way upstairs to put on some music and maybe drift off for another hour. I always go thru this sleep deprivation in January during the Australian Open. Now, what to listen to...hmmm. An ECM offering on the quieter side might do the trick Tirebiter. Thanks for the
