German reissue series [Vol. 1 to 20] of MCA originals MCA Coral 6.22 188 AK - John Graas Septet and Nonetet " West Coast Workshop" - rec. 1955 & 1956
Its a nice cool morning on the deck and no skunks in sight (or smell) today . I relocated yesterdays catch at my usual spot out in the country. It was my rd catch and release of the year so its getting routine. Gotta do some yard work and put a second coat of paint on the garage doors. It's life in paradise, I tell ya. Right now Sonny Stitt is going down nice and easy. Picked up a few more boxes of discs to sell yesterday and this one is full of 'Acid Jazz", which I guess was re-labeled soul jazz, marketed in the early days of CDs. Nice compilations that seem to be be two LPs on one disc and probably enjoyable, easy dates for the players, as the tunes are mosly mid tempo funk/soul-based instrumentals. Good to put on when you want to practice your scales or do some noodling. Stay smart and safe out there!!!! That's a great series, with covers you have to get used to. The Stitt is one of my favorites, along with the Boogaloo Joe Jones. Both those are excellent.
If I recall, the CD edition (Lonehill label) places the compositions in the sequence originally selected by John Graas. That seems to be an important factor for a musician known for his arranging talents. the original cover for volume 1 below (UK edition). The CD adapted the cover from Vol. 2. I never liked the types of generic covers used by many reissues. Poor art direction...though the original LP art was odd too.
I bought all of those when they were out on vinyl in the early 80s. Wonderful series to have. I remember the first time I heard In A Mellotone and Johnny Hodges alto playing - Oh my! Note the numbering of this one says Vol 10/11 which it also says on the back...but Vol 11/12 (correctly) on the spine!
Jane Bunnett - Spirits Of Havana (Denon CAN-9011) I love this album recorded in Havana, Cuba on September 1991. Jane Bunnett: Soprano sax, Flute Merceditas Valdes: Vocals Gonzalo Rubalcaba: Piano Guillermo Barreto: Timbales Larry Cramer: Trumpet, Flugelhorn
I'm reading this book at the moment. Really enjoying it. Wasn't sure as it received mixed reviews but it has great insight into this great ,but very private, player. More so than I was expecting.
The summer has switched to cool nights and mornings. Only 15c this morning. I love it much , just like I love this soulful slice of Mr. Webster... its interesting how a lot of the older cats like Webster and Hodges found a home on this label in the 60s. In light of that recent article posted here about the Thiele - Coltrane relationship, I wonder how much Bob had to do with this?
Streamed some Grant Green albums earlier: Born to be Blue Solid Idle Moments Grant Green Street Greatest Hits Matador Unrelated to Grant Green. Did sime browsing of a certain site and wondered if the first pressing of the Prestige Miles Davis 6 lp Analogue Productions box set sounds good. I might splurge and get it.
This is the 33 RPM vinyl version from the French reissue label Sam Records, issued several years ago. Sidemen are Art Morgan and Richard Davis. Ronnell Bright is a fine pianist as demonstrated on eight swingin' tracks here. This was originally recorded and issued in 1958 in mono on Polydor. My copy is a fine, flat pressing that plays great with very little background noise. My favorite tunes are "Sail'em", "Johnny Pate's Blues", "The Champ", and "Chasing Sarah", which is composed by Bright. Ronnell is an under appreciated pianist. "The Ronnell Bright Trio" is one of my favorite trio albums and gets played often out here. Nice Thursday startup.
Ben Webster - Soulville (Verve/Analogue Productions CVRJ-8274 SA) Great album with Webster accompanied by The Oscar Peterson Trio (Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis) and Stan Levey on drums. From October 1957.

Ha! I never noticed that all these years! You'd think as the other day I was listening to Vol. 9/10, that I would've clocked that.... I love this series. Have a few of them. Most were my Dad's, that he picked up when they came out, when you could buy a double album for £4 new! I've added a few more over the years where I've seen them in good condition.... the sound on these is generally great...
