NP: Out of the Cool (2021)

Do not leave out in the sun.
My Ryan Smith-mastered version arrived today left out of the cool in a hot mailbox. Seems fine though.
Planning a shootout for hot-stampers. Original mono vs. repress stereo ('van gelder'), vs. new arrival.

    Bill Frisell - History Mystery
    [IMG]

This afternoon just felt like a mandatory Bill Frisell kind of afternoon and these three discs (History Mystery is a double) really hit the spot. Unspeakable starts of as if it's going to be overly reliant on heavy handed beats, but Frisell uses the groove so effectively as a foundation for melodic exploration and modulation that the album retains a soulful groove without ever become repetitious or cliché in any way. He also tosses some avant gardisms on top of it all, creating a truly unique and compelling listen. It seems as if all Frisell's creativity is on full display here, making this one of my more favored albums.

For History Mystery, Frisell largely eschews the groove in favor of a more earthy, organic approach, but with a touch of eerie edginess on many of the cuts that make up the sprawling 90 minute, 30 part suite. Much of the mood comes from the ample use of fiddle, giving the album a distinctly country flavor, but again never in a standard or chichéd way. For me, country is usually an automatic disqualifier, but Frisell's use of the idiom here is nothing short of brilliant. You can hear the masterful integration of his myriad influences and means of expression and once again, it seems he's putting all his creativity on display, this time in an even more compelling way, if that's even possible. Over 90 magnificent minutes, with not a second wasted or second-guessed.

Awesome! It's a good day for a birthday. Though my mother told me numerous times over the years "It was 103 degrees that afternoon and there was no Air Conditioning at the hospital." I was born in a hospital which was built over the site of the home of President McKinley.

Thanks for the link. I purchased Out of the Cool too. Goes without saying the sound is amazing. The only negative for me is that halfway through the first song on side 1 there are four or five loud pops. I had cleaned it before I played it and cleaned it again. It softened but did not eliminate the pops :(

Thanks. I have spoken with Meredith many times about this project, all through the stages that led to its creation, and during the long period of realizing it. She is now 80, and says it is her swan song, but maybe the swans will return again.

For newcomers, I recommend her early works first and then go through her development. It is not because the earlier work is best. I recommend that approach for nearly all artists.

Some would find it interesting that John Coltrane once had Meredith sing with his famous quartet. It was not recorded.

Ricky Nelson starred in more movies. There is a famous western film that I don't remember now in which he appears.

Yesterday evening I listened to two records of the The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Thelonious Monk. Since I am still working from home, I am now looking at the box at the other side of the room and realize how much I love that picture of Monk.

Most designers would probably crop the picture more closely around Monk but the choice to leave almost the full lower half black creates a respectful distance and suggests quiet dedication. Monk is only writing but not yet playing: this might be the quiet before the storm. The cigarette in his left hand seems to be just an afterthought, a thing you almost unconsciously light when your are immersed in something challenging. The microphone on the right is not yet needed but holds a promise ...

While I'm not much of a Sinatra fan, I'm well aware that some of his Capitol releases had 'conceptual conceits,' and given his level of popularity, I'm guessing that others noticed.

I have several of those Connors releases from that period, before he moved on to singing and 'urban' music; I've been meaning to get them out and play them for some weeks now, instigated by discussions here of them.

Of course, the sentiments expressed in the lyrics likely had a great deal to do with the popularity of the record:

    I can't sleep at night
    I can't eat a bite
    'Cause the man I love
    He don't treat me right

He makes me feel so blue
I don't know what to do
    Sometime I sit and sigh
    And then begin to cry
    'Cause my best friend
    Said his last goodbye

There's a change in the ocean
Change in the deep blue sea, my baby
I'll tell you folks, there ain't no change in me
My love for that man will always be

Now I can read his letters
I sure can't read his mind
    I thought he's lovin' me
    He's leavin' all the time
Now I see my poor love was blind

Now I got the crazy blues
    Since my baby went away
I ain't got no time to lose
    I must find him today

Now the doctor's gonna do all that he can
But what you're gonna need is an undertaker man
I ain't had nothin' but bad news
Now I got the crazy blues

Now I can read his letters
I sure can't read his mind
    I thought he's lovin' me
    He's leavin' all the time
Now I see my poor love was blind

    I went to the railroad
Hang my head on the track
    Thought about my daddy
    I gladly snatched it back
    Now my babe's gone
    And gave me the sack

Now I've got the crazy blues
    Since my baby went away
I ain't had no time to lose
    I must find him today

I'm gonna do like a Chinaman
    Go and get some hop
Get myself a gun, and shoot myself a cop
I ain't had nothin' but bad news
Now I've got the crazy blues
