Kenny Dorham Matador (Capitol Records), 2021 Impex SACD. New arrival. Let's crank start the SACD player!
I seem to recall seeing a quote from Ellington on the topic along the lines of 'retire to what?' When "what you are doing" is "what you want to be doing," "retiring from it" isn't quite the same as 'retiring from doing something that you loathe.'
Berthold, I've a question about "how you listen" - given that every day you seem to post mostly recordings by the same artist, is that how you listen? If so, do you decide "on the spot" or prior to then? It's an honest question; myself, I generally (but not always) tend to put on something that's different from the previous choice.
For musicians, retirement generally means retiring from "the road", which can be a terrible burden. Jerry Jeff Walker once said that his view was that he was paid for the hard work of traveling, and that the performances were free. For many of us, retirement meant retiring from the daily commute.
There are SO many "hard luck stories" in the music 'business.' http://www.rebeatmag.com/arthur-alexander-beatles-rolling-stones-elvis/ IIRC, he'd just made a settlement on back royalties, but died before receiving them.
The topic reminds me of seeing a comment from Gatemouth Brown c. the late 1990s to the effect that 'he wanted to retire from touring, but financially, that wasn't an option.' Another basic about touring gleaned from bios and auto-bios are "the auto accidents."
In The Evenings Out There - (ECM) CD with Paul Bley | Gary Peacock | Tony Oxley | John Surman Baritone Saxophone, Bass Clarinet – John Surman / Bass – Gary Peacock / Drums – Tony Oxley / Piano – Paul Bley Recorded September 1991, Rainbow Studio, Oslo. CD issued with booklet. An impressive recording full of moody, atmospeheric pieces. The Quartet play together on one track and the remaining 11 selections feature either solo or duo pieces.
Waited for the just moment to listen to this recent arrival--the time is now! Santana "III" Sony SACD 2021
Original tracklist? I own the cd reissue of 1998 with the live tracks recorded in July 1971 for the Fillmore West's farewell concerts.
Thanks to DBJ for posting this elsewhere Mosaic on the Move: a Great Jazz Label Gets Smaller, Smarter
I had heard that they were closing their offices. Wonder where their inventory goes, not that it’s humongous.
Hi @ILovethebassclarinet , currently I´m listening to recordings by the same artist, because I like to get a deeper feeling about the music they play - and mostly I decide on the spot or one day before. Maybe next time I will do it differently. )
So, new month, new focus on things I haven't listened to in months/years and for December includes Blue Note. Which is rather handy given I'm reading the biog of Wayne Shorter - let's hope I can get up to his BN years. Start with this gem though recorded in 1965.
What they didn't sell or won't sell at the closure is probably in their out-sourced warehouse.* I'm not sure if the open house is upcoming or done, I too didn't get the email.
