the cat walk | donald byrd (Blue Note) CD - 2006 RVG remastered edition Baritone Saxophone – Pepper Adams / Bass – Laymon Jackson Drums – Philly Joe Jones / Piano – Duke Pearson / Trumpet – Donald Byrd 6 tracks recorded on May 2, 1961 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. Transfers from the analog tapes to digital were made at 24-bit resolution. It's been a long time since I played this fresh and upbeat Blue Note session.
Arthur Blythe - The Grip Arthur was fond of substituting a tuba for a bass, but he's still okay in my book (I'm a bassist - electric, but still...)
Good point as to their not being JATP performances; I missed that. However, on session (a) of Trumpet Kings the rhythm section is the same as session (O) on the Mosaic box.
John Coltrane – Blue Train Blue Note/King Record Co. Japan (1978) Tremendous horn presence and thunderous bass on this pressing — a very different approach from all digital transfers I've heard.
I have seen a few lists where it’s rated in the top 5 and others a little lower, but definitely in the top 20, and it’s one of those must have albums.
defo mate. it's up there with Kind of Blue, Time Out, A Love Supreme, Mingus Ah Um etc as a must have title
Gerry Mulligan – The Complete Pacific Jazz Recordings Of The Gerry Mulligan Quartet With Chet Baker (1996) 4-CD box set.
Moving on to a different vein; I can't even guesstimate when the last time I played it was, but I eagerly awaited its release and bought it new not soon after it was released, so I've heard it many times, just not recently.
I've always had trouble really getting into Mobley's two Prestige dates. They're not bad, but... I just get this feeling like the players are just blowing. I always seem to pull his Blue Note dates or even his Savoy dates before these two. Maybe I need to spin them again?
My wife has been home sick yesterday and today. . . I have not been listening to much music. Grabbing an hour or two now. . . . Fred Hirsch Trio "Alive at the Vanguard"
NP Brad Mehldau - Art Of The Trio Vol. 1 (Warner Bros.) cd Not sure I want to hear an entire album of Beatles interpretations but I really like his version of She’s Leaving Home.
