I only recently discovered WDCB on my car radio(!) dial - jazz radio from the college of DuPage. I unfortunately get iffy reception in my area but I'll take a bit of distortion if it's a short car ride. The other day they played an absolutely blistering uptempo number from this album, which I can't find in a lossless flac download. So I'm in search of anything by these guys that would scratch that itch: Bennie Green & Gene Ammons - The Swingin'est I already have a couple of the Ammons/Stitt Boss Tenors albums.
He championed Hawaiian slack key guitar on his Dancing Cat label. Some of the artists he recorded were Raymond Kane, Sonny Chillingworth, Ledward Kaapana, Cyril Pahinui, Keola Beamer and Ozzie Kotani. I'm sure that many people on the mainland got their first exposure to slack key music through George's efforts.
NP Red Garland Trio - Groovy (Prestige) OJC CD Groovy indeed and swinging! This cd sounds REALLY good.
It's completely news to me, but I like the Belden discs I've heard, especially Black Dahlia and the Miles/India set, so I'll be hunting for a copy of this soon...

Found this in the wild today for a couple of bucks. This edition is not listed on Discogs for some reason. Power Tools - Strange Meeting 1987 (422-842-648-2)
Interesting in that I just tried to find a CD or digital download version of Gene Ammons - The Soulful Moods Of Gene Ammons. I don't know if I am surprised or not that there are still so many albums that cannot be acquired other than on LP today...
I'll have to check that out, as it looks the same as the one I have from the same era that I bought upon release.
Friday MONK session continued Thelonious himself SOLO PIANO BY Thelonious Monk (Riverside) SHM-CD Nine tracks recorded 1957. There are eight superb solo pieces from Monk plus a version of Monks Mood' with Monk on piano, John Coltrane (tenor sax), and Wilbur Ware (bass). Basically an exceptionally impressive solo Monk title. *On the Japanese SHM-CD edition 'Monks Mood' is followed by a 21 odd minute outtake 'Round Midnight (In Progress)'. This lengthy track was not on the original LP.
I believe that track was first released in the Complete Riverside Recordings box set. A fascinating listen.
I recently heard some gossip that Frisell's wife told him to leave Power Tools because it wasn't his band. So without Frisell Gibbs hired Pete Cosey to take his place, except by that time Cosey's eyesight was so poor that he couldn't read any of the charts. I saw them play a gig at The Knitting Factory in NYC, the first time I'd ever seen Cosey. It was disappointing, but I wasn't aware Cosey was handicapped. I've never heard him do anything or fit in anywhere the way he did with Miles Davis.
That's too bad about Frisell. I think Power Tools is one of the best things he's been involved with. Pete Cosey was great on those mid-70s Miles albums. I don't know his other stuff.
Spinning disc 1 again. The engineering on this release is so good! Oud and percussion so precise and vivid. Recorded by Richard King at Sear Sound, NYC, Apr 10-16 2010. Mixed by Richard King at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, Montreal, Canada. Mastered by Carl Talbot at M1207-Le Lab, Montreal, Canada
Here are a few that I'm partial to. I play Beegie's Christmas piano jazz album multiple times during the holiday season.
