Best of Bee Gees Volumes 1 & 2 are definitely a good starting place! :agree:

Their first four (international) studio albums are amazing (as are their early 70s albums).

Out of print, but if you can get your hands on The Studio Albums 1967-1968 & Odessa (Deluxe), go for it. They should be available as digital downloads as well (Amazon, Itunes, etc).

If by pre-disco you mean "no falsettos", my choices would be Bee Gees First, Idea, Odessa, To Whom It May Concern and Mr. Natural. Main Course (first few falsettos here and there) is one of my favourites by any artist.

I’d start at the beginning and get a solid foundation before jumping to the “Best Of “ Lp’s. Their 1st Non Aussie Lp is amazing - every song is a gem. Enjoy!!!

Okay, I have read at least 8 threads on the Bee Gees and I still am unable to decipher the answer to this question:

What is the best mastering of "Bee Gees' 1st" available on CD?

I personally did not like the remasters mentioned further up the thread at all. I still prefer the old Polydors for the core four:

    Bee Gees' 1st - Polydor 825 220-2
    Horizontal - Polydor 833 659-2
    Idea - Polydor 833 660-2
    Odessa - Polydor 825 451-2

Note: Odessa omits the track With All Nations (International Anthem) to fit on a single disc. That may or may not be a deal-breaker for some.

The W. German or USA release of "Bee Gees' 1st - Polydor 825 220-2"?

They need to do a "deluxe" version of "Main Course" with expert mastering, bonus tracks, outtakes etc. In my opinion, their greatest album, 3 hit singles ("Jive Talkin'", "Nights On Broadway" and "Fanny") and a classic mid-70's rock/pop album that brought the BeeGees back into the limelight.

You can’t go wrong with Odessa. It’s a wonderful, and wonderfully sounding, album

For all the pre disco hits, you can’t go wrong with...

Does 1st sound good on Polydor? I’ve got a purple/tan Atco from 1968, and it is not ready for prime time....limpid. I love the songs!...so I need a good copy!

So? The OP wants good sounding Bee Gees.

But I do appreciate your enthusiasm for the song!

I enjoy the old Poly's as well.
Polygram/Polydor liked to use the same mastering's worldwide pretty much. My 1st is a Japan manufacture. Matches the German.
US also has a Odessa, sometime early 90's pre-remaster that includes With All Nations. :)

Let's put it this way - it isn't going to set anyone's world on fire and likely not become your next demo disc. On the other hand, it's inoffensive. Dynamics are intact, no horrible EQing. The transfer is very suitable for upping the volume control - very smooth and warm. Probably sourced from a tape initially intended for vinyl. The album would be an excellent choice for MFSL. They've been doing some extremely fine remasters.
