    Manilow Hospitalized With Chest Pains

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Barry Manilow (news) was hospitalized after suffering from chest pain due to stress, his publicist said.

Manilow was hospitalized Saturday after returning to his home from New York, where he and co-writer Bruce Sussman had taken part in "two of the most grueling days of arbitration" in a lawsuit over rights to the musical "Harmony," publicist Jerry J. Sharell said.

"Harmony" ran in Philadelphia but was canceled in November because it fell short of its capitalization. A 1997 production at the La Jolla Playhouse in California also faltered and closed after mixed reviews.

The show, which has music by Manilow and book and lyrics by Sussman, is about the Comedian Harmonists, a group of singers popular during the last days of Germany's Weimar Republic.

Manilow told the New York Post at the time of the Philadelphia cancellation, "Other than the death of my mother, this is probably the most devastating day of my life. Maybe even more so, because it affects so many other people."

I hope so, too....a really nice guy, which he proved when he turned up in an ep of "Murphy Brown" and had a little fun with the fact that Murphy took a shot at him. IIRC, he turns up at her home and sings to her infant son, and melted her heart...and mine. Like Johnny Mathis before him, a crooner at heart, wanting nothing more than to please his audience...and he has, for decades.

But maybe his shining moment--at least to me--to date has been his re-arrangement of Bette Midler's "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." The Lp version sounded too retro, but with the 45 remake, he not only mixed it to stereo, but captured the spirit of the piece at the same time. It swings!

Barry is a great guy, even though he wouldn't let DCC do a Gold CD of his hits.

Stress can kill you. Ease off a bit, boy!

I will be the first to admit that I would have bought Barry's hits on DCC! Steve, were you trying to do the '78 double-LP or a new comp?

    I wouldn't.

Seriously, from what I hear he IS a nice guy and I really don't mind hearing him on radio, but I wouldn't lay out a dime to buy his stuff...

Just me .... (and probably a few others).

Steve - which version of "Copacabana" would you have used? The hit single version or the extended disco mix?

I gotta ask - wouldn't this have been somewhat like working on your "Mamas and the Papas" compilation Steve? I don't mean that the recordings were bounced down 10 times or anything like that, it's just that a lot of that Barry Manilow stuff is pretty wonky sounding - some of the mixes just seem to be exercises in midrange and echo! I know that YOU could have made it sound decent :), but it would have been a bit of an adventure, no?

Never got far enough to find out. Who knows what the ACTUAL mixes sound like? I doubt they were ever used to make any actual records or CD's.

Well, there was at least one interesting Quad Lp, though it was pressed on typically crappy Arista vinyl of the time....

My Barry guilty pleasure is "Could It Be Magic"....great, lush orchestration, and his vocals are well measured, just right for the song....the 45 edit of this is very good, concise where the Lp version is nicely expansive.
