I think the only reason the B-side became important for Sam is that Mark wanted to fit more of his "grand plan" on to vinyl. It's also possible that he didn't have a recording to use on the B-side - hence the various stories about what the B-side would have been. It seems odd to folks to say it but Mark did not record as much as some producers.

Is it a blank side, silent groove, or 1khz tone cut into it?

Actually he did but it was all multi-layered and boiled down within only a few songs... What I mean is that any one of his songs is worth a dozen of others'. There is so much happening, and with productions so rich you could grow tomatoes next to your speakers. ;)

Just noticed Mike that you are from Southampton - I was born in Lyndhurst and brought up in Totton , Southampton - I only moved to Yorkshire about 15 years ago because of work.

You don't need to give me an excuse for moving away from Totton ;)

I'm at the Sholing end of Southampton, but I lived for a year or so in Lymington.

Strangely enough it was very near Totton (Millbrook I suppose) where I bought the 1st two TO singles.

    - and I have relatives in Yorkshire, who moved from Southampton.

My parents still live there - so I will be down again just after Christmas.

My younger sister lives in Lymington , her husband looks after the nesting turns on the salt marshes there.

    Small world.

I ordered another MW CD today.

    I love him to bits!

I only have it on the Hollywood Years CDs, but I have been given the correct order for listening and have assembled it in album order for a legal burn onto CD. I like Hothouse Smiles too.

Well I run Ed Rambeau's web site and I joined Spectropop and a few other Music groups. In December 2003 I read a post from Mark on spectropop - I don't remember what it was about - but I liked his style so I went and looked at his web site and e-mailed him - we exchanged a few e-mails and he let me download 'Love is Eggshaped' before it was released and he said keep in touch...... but of course I did not. Then in September last year Ed & I joined mySpace and I found Mark again on there ... Mark asked me if I would take over running his website(s) for him .... he now takes up 90% of my time -LOL

(The other 10% is spent on Designing & Maintaining 9 other web sites, Runnning 4 yahoo groups, working full time , being a mum ...and well you know stuff.........)

I like it. I would like to hear the full length version though. I gather that's the radio edit? I have a little gander round his site from time to time - looking to see if any Tempo stuff goes up there mainly.

    Wow, check this out...

Keith West works for Burns Guitars in the UK and apparently he did a performance in 2007 for "The Friends of the Shadows." Anyway, great to see Keith in fine form:

Something else came up in the search for Keith West. This clip has a version of Excerpt with a count in that I've never heard... and I thought I had heard every version of the song. Anyone else have this???? Some how the mix seems different to me as well.

Yes, the mix is completely different. There are extra vocal layers and alternate kids vocals. Very very interesting. Someone has the multis!!

Is the vocal different? Does Mark W know anything about this one?

There's that percussion at the end of the track sounding way more prominent too.

It's the same lead but there are spots of doubling etc that make it sound like a different mix to me.

I doubt he knows about it but I just called him to check... I figured he'd want to know about Norman Smith dying so it was worth calling. Mark's been ailing with a throat issue so I'm not even sure if he's home from the hospital.
