It is but it's still pretty silly to spend that much on such a basic product, same as cables, or even a turntable. A box that spins is something I spent thousands on.

We all know how nicer it sounds than a Cosley but it's still funny and silly that this much money was sunk into that. :D

It’s like one of those empty amp boxes that are used by rock bands to fill the stage and impress the crowd.

    Or to bolster their ego

Cross posted from a similar thread just in case the haters missed the reason why this "silly" "overpriced" box costs so darn much

It's a silly thread about a silly product and some people are having some light-hearted fun. Think you're getting worked up over nothing. I've only seen 1-2 "haters". The rest are just poking fun; nothing wrong with that.

So they basically spent too much money on new fabricating machines and now need to create and sell 'air' to pay off their bills, good thinking !

And you actually think that's the reason those machines were purchased was to make those "silly" "overpriced" boxes of air? Not to mention their overpaid paid help is there for that single reason as well? I suppose it doesn't cost anything to maintain those rigs or power them either? Materials needed are also dirt cheap no doubt. Yup very good thinking:laugh:

Not at all, but obviously the empty boxes help a lot in paying off the machines, there's no denying/arguing that :D!

They're also now sold out, so it was a good decision for them.

If you're going for the "all Mc" aesthetic, it's definitely a useful product.

Just the 2 machines that Ken listed add up to $550,000 and this isn't counting labor, materials or sale taxes. Please explain the mathematics used in determining those $1,500 "empty boxes" "are a lot of help" in paying off that amount of overhead?

The first version, the LB100, didn't have the secret compartment functionality. So at least the LB200 has that going for it...which is nice... ;)

Yeah, you're right they need to sell 'at least' 400 of them. So they need to find 150 new McIntosh customers first :D.

I wonder if aliexpress will be able to copy this contraption - seems it would be difficult.

They'll probably mess it up completely and make a digital remote controlled opening backflap ('oh the horror') whereas the Mc is the real thing and totally analog operated.

So according to your math there's 100% profit in these silly little boxes. Perhaps you should apply as an accountant for Mcintosh;)

I tried doing that but they thought my CV looked too 'empty' ;).

Anyway you slice it, this is a promotional item that dealers should give to customers who spend $10K on Mac gear. It’s an advertising item.

That may well be the case (as with the LB100)… but it still needs to be in the price book and it's nice that you can walk in and just order one if you really like it.

For example, the clock may be a promo item as well but I've thought about buying one just because it's kind of a cool work of art, IMHO.

The LB200 reminded me of the McIntosh Chronulator/Clock (see pic above). Another McIntosh product that has a ridiculous price of $1,800.00 that can also be considered close to an empty box, because the components for this clock would cost ~$50. They must value their name to be $1,750.00 per product.

If you replace "cool" with "kitsch", that's accurate.

Personally, I'd go for the McIntosh AP1...

They've managed that nicely themselves by putting this junk out.
