So true! A half speed remaster goes for over $60 on discogs. What's another $40 for something clean... Regarding analog v. digital, isn't the MOFI silver label digital?
If it helps, I'm afraid this is the state of things after Brexit Before, I would get "hit" with import duties every now and then, after Brexit it's every single parcel coming from anyplace that isn't the EU.
Is the idea that a 45rpm ultradisc will come out later. Cause it says that here: Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller 40’ Anniversary Edition Due in the Fall: Unreleased Tracks, Other ‘Surprises’
What's nonsense is your speaking from inexperience. This has been discussed a million times by Steve and others. Master tapes being in great shape even after 4 decades or longer is not uncommon. Remastered reissues from the master tapes from decades ago sounding fantastic such as the Fleetwood Mac Rumours by our host and Kevin Gray is but one high-profile example. I suggest you stick to topics you have knowledge and experience about.
MoFi will replicate the original album. They very rarely add any extra. The Sony 2CD might be your best bet.
so like is it worth waiting for the 45rpm then? is that pretty much the gold standard. I cannot afford (or rather justify spending) both.
I guess this is very much a subjective decision - although I'm sure that someone will be in a position to advise you on the differences in quality/fidelity between a single 33rpm and two 45rpm. For my part, I would sprig for the 2x45rpm if I really loved this album. It might also pay in the long run, since the 2x45rpm might gain more in the used market. But don't take my word for it, someone more knowledgeable than me will be able to tell you more.
Right. You know what will be coming though..." I just compared my Japan Sony Thriller SACD to the MOFI version, and boy does the MOFI suck in comparison."
I think so... Here's what looks like a Japan 45 with the mix that ended up as the standard album mix after initial release: Michael Jackson = マイケル・ジャクソン - Billie Jean = ビリー・ジーン [Discogs]
Didn’t even realize the early pressing was different! I have one with -2A side 1, -2D side 2 and lacks the Jackson co-producer credit on the jacket. From what I can tell from Discogs that is probably first pressing, but I can’t tell if the mix is any different. What are the mixing differences? EDIT: Never mind! Just figured it out. The “oh no” after “his eyes were like mine” at about 2:24 is nearly mixed out in that YouTube clip. My -2D side two has the “oh no” clearly audible in the right channel. That change must have been made very early on if that YouTube clip is a first US pressing.
I saw somewhere that the extended version of BJ would be the version that would be on Thriller, but because of lenght of side B, they edited the track (same thing of Lady In My Life).
