https://twitter.com/michaeljackson/status/1526185701083123713 On November 30th, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” turns 40 years old. A special 2-disc anniversary edition of the album will be released at the end of the year and is available today for pre-order. Reserve yours now: https://MichaelJackson.lnk.to/Thriller40thTA
It would have been a miracle if they’d let this anniversary pass by. To be honest, I’m surprised they haven’t gone for a full on boxset…
From what I can see, MOFI is going to be handling this one as a One Step Pressing and SACD: Michael Jackson - Thriller Day one purchase for an audiophile mastering of this album!
A nice surprise that they're releasing the SACD again. It's a shame that the MoFi discs will not include the unreleased demo's like the standard cd.
I hope this includes the demo version of YMO's Behind The Mask, without all the Frankenstein editing they did for the single release.
Knowing the estate, it's going to be nothing but "unreleased" tracks that either have a) actually already been released as bonus content on other releases b) tracks that leaked ages ago c) all of the above I also imagine it's going to end up like the "special edition" of THIS IS IT and have like 5 bonus tracks on one cd (hardly enough to justify the second disc) but happy to be proven wrong. Was REALLY hoping this would include the restored THRILLER music video, but as someone else said, probably saving that for Thriller 50 (or when Landis dies, whatever comes first). But I'm pre-ordering the MOFI Vinyl/SACD immediately. The SACD says its Hybrid and alludes to "lifelike" sound, which I hope means multichannel (finally).
It actually was started a while ago (like around Thriller 25), and I believe Jackson pulled the plug on it. That said, with half the work done already it wouldn't take much to finish it up. TBPH I wouldn't be surprised to see a Multichannel version end up on Apple Music/other streaming services, and just not have a physical release. Compatible in both SACD players and standard CD players. Standard CD players will just play redbook audio. SACD players will playback the hi-res SACD audio.
I'll be more interested in this when I see a tracklist. I've already got the 25th anniversary edition w/ the DVD. If there aren't as many re-recordings and more quality outtakes like For All Time, I'll buy it. I'll probably also buy the SACD if the price goes down a bit. $30 is too much for me when I don't know if the mix is good or not.
I'm going to assume this is a repackage of the current CD which was remastered by Tom Coyne whose DR values look like this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Analyzed folder: C:\Users\p\Music\Michael Jackson\Thriller\ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR Peak RMS Filename ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR8 -0.18 dB -9.08 dB 01 Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'.wav DR8 -0.50 dB -10.43 dB 02 Baby Be Mine.wav DR8 -0.57 dB -11.52 dB 03 The Girl Is Mine.wav DR8 -0.69 dB -9.90 dB 04 Thriller.wav DR7 -0.41 dB -8.84 dB 05 Beat It.wav DR8 -0.00 dB -9.50 dB 06 Billie Jean.wav DR8 over -9.64 dB 07 Human Nature.wav DR8 -0.41 dB -9.99 dB 08 PYT (Pretty Young Thing).wav DR8 -0.11 dB -11.14 dB 09 The Lady in My Life.wav ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Number of files: 9 Official DR value: DR8 ==============================================================================================
Wow. Never thought I'd see an audiophile label licensing this, but I guess enough has changed to make that feasible. Hope they do Off the Wall (which I prefer) and maybe even Dangerous and HIStory - at least the latter would benefit from a mastering that isn't brickwalled.
I think i'm pre-ordering the SACD and buying the bonus tracks digitally. Getting the best of both worlds
Those leaked tracks have never had an official release, so there’s really no issue with releasing them on this…
Yeah, that's one reason I hope they get released officially here. It would be nice to have them in pristine quality as opposed to the 7th generation tape dub quality I've heard them in.
They used to, I don't know if they do anymore. I believe at one point, I had read that a 5.1 mix was prepared for this album and MJ himself nixed it. One of his Greatest Hits DVDs has a few of these songs in 5.1 Dolby.
"Mastered from the original analog master tapes, Mobile Fidelity will also make available the original Thriller album as a One-Step 180g 33RPM LP, pressed at RTI and strictly limited to 40,000 numbered copies as well as a hybrid SACD . An UltraDisc One-Step 180g 45RPM 2LP set of Thriller will be released at a future date." https://www.broadwayworld.com/bwwmu...-on-Thriller-40-Anniversary-2-CD-Set-20220516
