I don't even know if something like this exists: is there any software that would take a piece of music, like solo piano, in a wav file and convert it into a MIDI sequence? I can understand why it wouldn't work with complex music, but for something like a solo instrument, it would just be a matter of finding the appropriate frequency and timing.

I use Cakewalk 9 for some light MIDI editing, but have never noticed anything that would digitize anything from a sound file to MIDI.

Looks like you answered your own question!

I do a lot of Midi work, and that program looks very promising.

P.S. - I lived in East Detroit (now East Pointe) for a while back in the mid 80's - I used to like to buy records at "Sams Jams" - ever hear of it?

    Is it still there?

Shoot...Sam's was my hangout for awhile! They were in two locations--they had a smaller store on 9 Mile, but moved to that vacant drugstore a block over and got the twice the space. In the newer location, I used to hang out in the jazz room on Friday evenings. They never used to honor requests, but for regulars like myself, they were always happy to throw the latest on the CD player for me. It got to the point where, once in a great while, they'd find something I was looking for and hold it for me...or when I once special ordered a Moondog LP, a used copy of a different LP came up a couple months later and they held onto it until they found out if I wanted first crack at buying it. I even remember preordering the first four Beatles CDs, and rushing over there on lunch hour to pick them up on release day. Or in the era shortly before CDs, they had these LP blowout sales, selling new LPs for $4.95 during the first couple weeks of release. I remember Synchronicity (The Police) being available for $4.95 shortly after it was released.

They're long gone, though. Steve Milgrim (the owner) was producing small shows at the store (usually pre-concert appearances by major artists), and I think he felt like he'd rather be a theater impresario instead of a record store owner. He bought a XXX theater on Woodward and turned it into the Magic Bag Theater. I don't know what's become of him these days--the theater has changed hands at least once or twice. And IMHO, it's still a flea pit. They had a unique thing going there--not necessarily the new/used LP/CD store, but just the whole environment. Sorely missed!

What part of East Detroit were you in? We lived in Detroit for a couple of years--Moross & Kelly area--so we were a stone's throw away. In fact, my cousin worked at that recording studio up there (on 9 or 10 Mile...?) before he moved on. It was called GM Sound back then, around 1973 or 1974...seems like it changed names every couple of years. :)

I lived just off 8 Mile and Gratiot. Right where the Original Buscemi's is.

Just a block away from the White Castle - in fact there was another White Castle on 9 Mile, and seeing them always made me feel at home. In Brooklyn I grew up with a White Castle on the corner, also.

Sad to hear about Sam's - I smile every time I pull out an LP or 45 and see the "Sams Jams" price tag. Any time I found myself in the Detroit area Sams was on my list of places to stop at. Now that I think of it, I have video of the last time I was there, in about 1994. Good thing I got it on tape.

The woman I lived with at the time showed me a lot of great places - to eat, of course!

Some of my favorites are "Hella's" in Greektown, with "Pegasus" a close second. In Hella's the best dish is the combination Mousakka, Pastitio, and Spinach Pie, and Pegasus' appetiser combo can't be beat.

There was also a great buffet at Sveden Haus - I think it's called. No wonder I put on so much weight.

Driving through the tunnel to Windsor was always fun - a cool place to hang out on a Saturday night - and Cuban cigars are legal there.

I found a great music store, "Gordy's Music" not too far from Sam's Jams, also.

My friends thought I was crazy, "Detroit?!?!?" but I enjoyed the area a lot!

Was the casino in Windsor when you still lived here? We now have three casinos downtown, Windsor has theirs (which most folks seem to prefer, until they cash out their chips ;) ), and the Tiger and Lions have new stadiums across from the Fox Theater.

Sveden Haus is still around. I've been here all my life, though, and never have eaten in Greektown! Some of the restaurants have opened places in the 'burbs.

That White Castle on 8/Gratiot was the only one close to where I worked back then (up by Old 8 Mile on Harper, across from the Caddy dealer). In fact, they may have rebuilt it or modernized it, as it was a newer design when we started going to it.

Ever hit Melodies & Memories just up the road apiece on Gratiot? Used to hit that during lunch, along with Car City on Harper (dangerously close to the office :D ).

No, I predated them. The FOX theatre wasn't restored yet, either. I couldn't believe how beautiful the marquee is in '94 - I passed it on the way to Greektown, and Michael Jackson was appearing that evening.

You must visit Hella's sometime - excellent food - and it's right across from Trappers Alley.

So they finally decided on a location! I remember seeing two or three sites with signs saying "Future Home of Tiger Stadium" one on Jefferson.

I think I did stop on there a few times. I haven't thought about that area for quite sme time, and now I'm all full of nostalgia.
