Need a new amp now that my Sony micro hifi is dying, but all the modern ones have record inputs but no monitors. Do they still make them or are they vintage only?

I am not aware of any with a monitor option, but I'm curious why you need that feature?

If you have one source, like a CD player, you could put it between the source and the amp. Tape loops are pretty scarce these days.

Vincent Audio has a "record out" connection on their preamps and integrated amps.

unfortunately I don't, but would this work: pre amp then EQ then power amp?

Some of the not so modern Onkyo receivers (such as TX-8255 from late 2000s) had Tape 2 Monitor function like the old days. Also some of the receivers have Zone 2 function which can be used as monitor loop.

My NAD C356BEE has both Tape Monitor In/Out and Tape 2 In/Out
    [IMG]

This from the manual, not sure it fits what you are looking for:

"TAPE MONITOR: Selects the output from a tape recorder when playing back tapes or monitor recordings that are being made through the TAPE MONITOR sockets. TAPE MONITOR does not override the current input selection. For example, if CD is the active input when TAPE MONITOR is selected, then the CD signal will continue to be selected and sent to both the TAPE 2 and TAPE MONITOR output sockets, but it is the sound from recorder connected to TAPE MONITOR that will be heard in the loudspeakers. Apart from the TAPE MONITOR LED illuminated to indicate it is engaged, the corresponding LED indicator for the active input will also stay illuminated."

I remeber finding a nice looking amp, and after some looking around I found this :
    TEAC A-R650MKII

Any good? What hi-fi gave it a 3 out of 5, but I dont need the perfect sound, as long as it sounds good.

Good to my ears. The volume has to be turned up more compared to other line level sources like CD. Though I've only compared it to:

    1 - A 40 year old vintage pioneer receiver
    2 - A 25 year old Onkyo receiver
    3 - A $60 phono preamp from china

Thanks for the info. I use a Sherwood S-9900a integrated amp, probably made around '67 that I've had rebuilt at Stereo rehab in Chicago and the phono section in it blows me away with spacial detail, so your pioneer receiver may very well have a quite good phono section.

It depends on what you consider to be “modern” and “vintage”.

Among integrateds having the “monitoring” circuit, actually present on mfrs’ sites, surely “modern”:
    “NAD C326BEE”.

If NAD C356BEE, NAD C375BEE, Cambridge Audio AZUR851A, Cambridge Audio AZUR740A, Yamaha AX-397 are not yet “vintage” for you, choose.

Presence on an amplifier of one of two pairs of recording/ playback inputs/outputs DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN EXISTENCE OF THE MONITORING FUNCTION IN THE GIVEN MODEL!
