Richard Brooks "Looking For Mr. Goodbar" - it was so dark and dirty (and didn't like it)

If I hadn't seen the credits, I would have never though it was him, the man who did "Elmer Gantry", "The Professionals", "The Happy-Ending", etc...

Hitchock's 1940's comedy Mr and Mrs Smith with Carole Lombard is even more different for him than The Trouble With Harry

One assumes that a big reason he made Smith was his friendship with Carole Lombard

Popeye by Robert Altman.....which I consider one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Cocaine is a hell of a drug

    The Coen Brothers.

I cannot believe that the same pair who put out an absolute masterpiece in their (fairly) faithful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel, No Country for Old Men, put out the wretched Burn After Reading a year later. The latter--despite its cast--is one of worst things ever financed by Hollywood.

    Michael Mann - The Keep.

The only sci-fi/fantasy film he's ever made.

saw maybe the last half hour, tripped over it whilst channel surfing.
It wasn't bad, just a very typical screwball comedy. It won't leave any lasting impression

I couldn't make it through. Absolutely terrible. Pitt was atrocious and because of that I didn't attempt to watch the Basterds until a night I was bored years later.

@unclefred : Concur. In fact, this film was one of two (in my life, and I'm only 37) films that I saw in theater that were so terrible I walked out midway through. Easily Brad's worst work as an actor--but he's more than made up for it in Killing Them Softly, Fury, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

I'd add "The Elephant Man" (both are my favorite movies of Lynch - I fell out of love from surrealism after a few years)

Not everything Martin Scorsese does has to be a serious, stylish drama, but his remake of Cape Fear was just a generic 90’s thriller that gives no indication of having been made by a big name auteur.

Bound (1996) by The Wachowskis. This bears no resemblance at all to the Matrix movies or any of their other later films. It's a stylish, low-budget film noir with a clever script, a great cast and no special effects of any kind.

"Color of Money" probably isn't a big departure for Scorsese, but it feels more like Marty made a Michelob commercial! :D

    Michael I LOVE WIDE S-T-E-R-E-O!

I agree and it paled against the original...

The Bridges Of Madison County (Clint Eastwood) has to be the definition of a directorial anomaly.

I dunno - I think "Jersey Boys" is the biggest anomaly in Clint's directorial collection! :)

I'd pick "Benjamin Button" as the anomaly in Fincher's catalog.

It's 1 of only 2 non-"R" movies he's made, and most of them involve crime/violence.

"Social Network" was unusual for Fincher as well, but not as much as "Button", IMO.

"Button" was a whimsical fantasy - way more Tim Burton. At least "Network" still "felt like Fincher"! :)

It's probably their best movie aside from the original Matrix. Most of the other films they've done have been hot garbage.

... and it's one of my favourite Clint flicks! I don't watch a ton of romance films, but this one is great and even brings a tear to my eye!
