Decan Blues. The only SD song that can stop me in my tracks and force me to listen to it when I'm doing something.
Agreed, Your Gold Teeth is my #1. Such an incredible groove and the playing is phenomenal. Especially the end part where the tempo doubles and they don't miss a beat. my Second would be the "Royal Scam" equivalent "Green Earrings", another great jazz rock jam that doesn't let up.
If I had to chose just one it would probably be Show Biz Kids. Or maybe Your Gold Teeth II. Or maybe Dallas (yes really).
The most obvious Dan tune, but so full of depth. Years ago I would crank this tune up on the 15' woofers and hear the massive depth and sequence as well as unfathomable musicianship. Man I miss the 1970's.
Katy Lied is stacked from top to bottom and the two songs that close out side one are my favorite SD songs: Daddy don’t live in that New York City no more and the pinnacle of Dan perfection, Dr Wu.
Curisously how many folks here love Everything Must Go album? I think it holds up to their early catalog as quintessential Steely Dan. I like it way more than Two Against Nature which feels sterile and monotonous. "Things I Miss the Most", "Blues Beach", "Godwhacker" is a fantastic trio of songs.
Impossible to pick: Fagan, Becker & all the best Aja (Wayne Shorter + Steve Gadd is mind boggling!) but ditto on everyone else's choice!
Strangely, spellcheck didn't correct mine as it's an error. When I checked "decan" in the online dictionary, it stated that it was a demarcation used in astrology! Oooh. spooky.
I'm sorry, but reading everyone's lists here just reinforces that I don't have 'a' favorite. There are SO many great, even astonishing songs that my list would be about 1/4 of all the songs they did on their albums up through Aja.
