If I am correct I believe the MM phono is the same in the Elex and Elicit-R. I think the Elicit's phono is quite decent, and sounded great with the Exact 2 when I was using this combo.
I have never used the phono stage but tonight I will switch back and forth from the benchmark and rega to give you an accurate description of the rega Elex r sound. it’s a great amp , that I can tell you for sure.
i have elex r and naim nait 5si; i would to sell one and i think that i stay with elex because I love the sound
sorry for the stupid question; if I use pre out rca on elex to connect to a power amplifier, the elex can be powered on without loudspeakers? I remember in the past, that speakers should be always connected to an amplifier..
With my Stanton 881S cart, this is the stylus that I am using. Its NOS: STANTON NEW GENUINE N890E 890E ELLIPTICAL STYLUS | eBay Its Elliptical, not the Conical version. Is it really worth me buying a Shibata stylus from LP Gear for $167? Or even the Vivid line for $114? Will the sound really improve that much over what I've got ? Thanks for your thoughts.
it seems incredible to me but this amplifier drives the ls3 / 5a very well ... tomorrow I'll try it a bit more but I think I'm falling in love
I wouldn't run that amp with the towel/rag or whatever is on top of it. The Elex and other Rega amps use the case for heat sinking.
The Elex-R is one of the best integrated amps available. It runs circles around competitors that cost twice as much, and even more. I recently compared it to a Naim Nait XS-3 and an older Nait XS. Frankly, even comparing them was ridiculous. The Elex-R sounded better in every way.
I owned two. The first one I sold off because I grew tired of its excessively 'voiced' nature. Its anything but neutral. But then I came across a good deal on a used one, so figured I'd try again. Same issue, incredibly voiced to a designers sound signature, rather than just being an honest amp. So dumped the 2nd one. That was my last Rega amp.
It is definitely voiced for vinyl and that won't sit well with some people. I have owned two, or three, Elex-R amps and they have all sounded different from each other too.
Can you recommend an alternative integrated amp that's more "honest"? I went through many but would love to check.
Sounded different from each other? That's very odd and unlikely. Are you sure you tested correctly? (same acoustics/speakers/cables etc.)
It isn't that odd and it isn't that unlikely. Amplifiers bed into running production and can 'settle' in the production line and into a particular sound. Manufacturers often also alter the design slightly during production in response to warranty failures etc. as they get a feel for what components are causing problems. The excellent Paul Miller used to produce repeat measurements of the same model of amplifier at release and some months/years on into running production and the measured performance usually differed, sometimes slightly and sometimes very significantly!
in my case the naim nait 5si is perhaps more neutral in sound, but in the long run without a soul compared to Elex (i sold the nait)
Yes usually unannounced. I think the Elex-R underwent a revision due to failing volume rotary controls? My previous Arcam amp introduced circuit protection which limited output currents and meant it was less tolerant of difficult speakers.
