Not seen any reports of that, but when a death of someone not elderly is announced and no reason is given, it often turn out to be suicide. Unfortunately. Horrible.
Most on this thread seem to know more of his Cardinals period - but check out his CRB years; he lays down some real gems throughout the whole period a real loss this is, he had so much to give.
Shocking, terrible and unbelievably sad. Quietly only of the best guitarist that ever played and as nice of a guy as you will ever meet.
Also check his solo material. It was a shame he never caught on. He was part of the early wave of alt-country artists - his album Fade Away Diamond Time is brilliant.
I’ve been meaning to listen to his solo work for years. Sad that this is likely what will push me to do so. Thanks for the recommendation.
Terrible news. Such a subtle guitar player. Loved seeing him with CRB. Did not know about the Beechwood Sparks.
One of the greatest debuts ever, and hardly anybody knows of it including fans of his CRB and Ryan Adams work. Deserves a deluxe vinyl reissue. Im shocked by the news. What a terrible tragedy.
Terrible news. Great guy, great player/musician. He'll be really missed. Seems like it's always the nicest people who are suffering from depression.
Tarnished Gold is the album he is on with them, and it is a great one. Their self titled is the must hear if you had to pick only one though!
Devastating is the right word. I'm in shock. First David Berman, now Neal... it's been a rough summer.
Pitchfork has confirmed he took his own life. Neal Casal, Singer-Songwriter and Veteran Folk Guitarist, Dead at 50 | Pitchfork Weirdly, makes no mention of the CRB despite that being his main band for the last 8 years.
thanks for putting up the link, Sam. It deserves a wider audience. At the same time, the youtube thing is a sad reminder of why it has become increasingly difficult for middle-ranking musicians to make money out of their art...
This is awful news, I wasn't hugely familiar with his solo work, but he had a great track on Uncut magazine's Sounds of The New West 1998 compilation CD, which was a real game-changer for me. RIP.
Seems to be true... Jenny Aurthur on Instagram: “One of the greatest loves of my life, Neal Casal, took his own life yesterday. I will miss him so much. Rest easy Nel, Herman Nelville,…”
