I grew up in central Mass. in the mid-70s and early 80s... mostly it was WAAF but occasionally it'd be WARE out of Ware, Mass since I lived in the next town... I believe WARE is one of only three radio stations in the US that shares call letters with their hometown... I can still remember the jingle WARE used to identify itself though I haven't heard it in over 35 years...

Wolf also did his own WBCN lunchtime parody of the above tune (at 6:30):

I thought this was going to be a radio station that plays nothing but music by New England.

I remember listening to JB-105 (WPJB) out of Providence, RI (up until '85)...

    From: WPJB (JB 105) History

"On June 13, 1985, listeners were treated to a continuously repeated recording pronouncing that “WPJB is dead!”. This was followed by the continuous playing of Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life", along with "Taps"".

I grew up in 4-eva Mass (Fall River) and I would frequently call into this one particular station (not JB-105) to request songs. Anyway, the female DJ was very nice, but I think she thought I was older than I was.

Anyway, one day I was telling her how interested in radio I was and asked if I could get a tour of the station and she agrees.

However, I think she was a bit surprised when a 14 year old kid shows up and his mom waits for him in the car.

Needless to say, it was a brief tour of the station and the request line never felt quite the same again.

I listened to WDRC, KISS FM and WTIC out of Hartford growing up in the 80s.

WARE is still on the air. I still listen to it. It’s now known as Classic Hits ...They have a FM freq 97.7 but still on AM 1250. Go to Classicshits977.com to listen. Its still a local run station. Although the station is run out of Palmer now.

Based on my experience I'd say give it another try.
