i was looking forward to this ever since the announcement came out, which was over a year after it was rumored to be coming out. i dont understand the hold up.
Well, at least Tom and the guys are active. They showed up for a surprise mini set at the annual Merry Minstrel benefit in LA last night. And Jeff Lynne came out for a mini-Wilburys reunion to boot! Hoping some videos pop up soon, looks like an amazing show! I've really gotta make it out west for this show next year! Setlist: Cabin Down Below Little Red Rooster I'm a Man 13 Days Dogs on the Run Runaway Poor House Roll Over Beethoven Mary Jane Runnin' Down A Dream
Which wouldn't make much sense, considering Wildflowers was a Petty solo album...but I'll takes what I can gets.
Update thanks to Mike Campbell -- Mudcrutch album comin', along with small batch of dates in the summer. A "whole bunch" of HB reissues throughout the year, but no HB dates until Fall 2016 at the earliest.
Besides the album itself, and apparently "Mary Janes Last Dance" what other songs (that have been released) were recorded during these sessions? What is missing that is not released?
Pretty sure "Mary Jane's Last Dance" was not from these sessions. Lynch was gone by Wallflowers and isn't on any of it. I think "Mary Jane's Last Dance" was recorded specifically for the greatest hits. A lot of she's the one is from those sessions and they released one song last year digitally that I think had been previously unreleased. There are probably others like that, but I'm not very knowledgeable on the matter.
This. "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and "Something In The Air" were released as singles to promote "Greatest Hits" in 1993.
Petty was recording Wildflowers with Rubin and fighting MCA to get out of his contract. The Greatest Hits was a way for him to settle up with MCA. Accordingly, he went into the studio with the Heartbreakers specifically to record new songs for the hits album, but insisted the sessions be kept 100% separate from the Wildflowers ones. So basically, Wildflowers was recorded before AND after the new Greatest Hits songs... But the sessions aren't connected.
There's several tracks that have been known about that were recorded during WF: Leave Virginia Alone Confusion Wheel Something's Gonna Happen Lonesome Dave Along with the She's The One tunes: Climb That Hill California Hope You Never Etc.
I think She's the One is one of the best things Petty ever did. Hugely under-rated, and not least of all-it would seem--by Petty himself.
The 1993 sessions with Mary Jane and Something In The Air were recorded during the same sessions as the tunes Baby Let's Play House, Wooden Heart, Blue Moon of Kentucky and Come On Down To My House.
It would be nice to see more professionally produced complete live concerts (at least one from each career period) released on CD and LP.
I believe so. The excellent recent Petty bio goes into more detail. If memory serves, Tom was recording Wildflowers from 1992 all the way into 1994... Which explains all the extra songs. The Greatest Hits session was a brief detour in the middle. I would suspect Tom wouldn't want any of that material going in the deluxe Wildflowers package, as he considered them two separate entities.
I think it goes to show what high quality material he was producing in that period though. Pretty impressive.
You don't think the Anthology stereo and surround mix collection doesn't sound professional? Thinking about it, Maybe you didn't hear it. I got it as a Blu Ray Audio disc that came in his deluxe box set a few years back. It's terrific. It's like 5 cd's of music on one disc. Also in that deluxe set is a video of the band playing New Year's Eve 1978 at the Santa Monica Civic Center. Man the band was hungry and on fire. It's also in 5.1 and stereo, likely mixed from 16 track 2". They were playing songs from Damn the Torpedoes which hadnt been released yet. It is one of my favorite recordings, period.
By the way, the New Years dvd can be bought at a site called "dvd Rock Depot" for $5.00 I don't know anything about this site, but it showed up on Google. If you can get this concert for $ 5.00, it's a big bargain for Petty fans
Wrong. I own a couple versions of the Anthology live collection including the deluxe edition. No complaints whatsoever, but remember that most of the songs were compiled from various performances. The Santa Monica Civic Center performance is very enjoyable. My argument is that an artist of huge proportions such as Tom Petty should have more complete concert releases.
