It was not officially announced yet and sales have not started . Some folks got previews from other sources.
How often has Chris Bellman done CDs ? Checking my own collection, and using Discogs (which has it's errors) I see mostly vinyl. I need confirmation on who mastered the CDs.
There is nowhere *near* 70% unreleased recordings if you own all of his albums and the "Live Anthology" set. Not even close. My initial enthusiasm has subsided substantially, especially the way the original post (press release?) was worded. I feel that the unreleased tracks from the "Playback" box set will remain far more interesting and worthwhile than the handful (maybe 1 CD's worth, at best) of previously unreleased tracks on this set. Still, as a huge Petty fan, I will probably pick this up at some point, but certainly would not want to spend more than $25-$30 for it, tops.
This is probably a nice way to celebrate his legacy in the sense that it will likely cover their entire career. However, I was looking forward to the wildflowers boxed set.
I would sell a kidney to get this. I wouldn't expect them to get individual releases, but a box set with all the remasters seems like a no-brainer to me. If they're worried about a lack of interest, call it "limited edition", that seems to be an effective way to get people to buy it. That said, what we're getting, even based on the limited information we've got, seems like it's already carving out a spot on my shelf. And what an accurate title. I still don't think I've accepted that he's gone.
So, my thoughts on this. I love Tom Petty...without a doubt. One of my favorites, of all time. This compilation...the good outweighs the bad here. I'm surprised but not surprised that there isn't a listing for a Blu-Ray version yet. There never usually is an announcement for hi-res by anyone, but if @ryan de topanga had his hand in this project, then I'm confident there will be a hi-res version of the 4CD set (if not, then I'll go for the vinyl), which is what I'm going to spring for on release day, since the hi-res of his catalog was outstanding. All that said, I am shocked that the rare maxi-single track "Take Out Some Insurance" live in Gainesville 1993 isn't included, as I paid $30 for said maxi single on Discogs in September of last year. I'm also surprised "Make That Connection" isn't included, as that is a favorite of Benmont and I believe Mike, too. No matter! I'm in for the hi-res when that's finally announced.
Different from Live Anthology : Did they play two nights ? Live Anthology Credits state June 29th, 1981 : Found no official duplication on these four : For me I'm seein' 67% I don't already have.
There is a LOT more info. in the other thread !!!! Track listing / photos / M-O-R-E TOM PETTY/HEARTBREAKERS: Career Spanning Box Set Coming Soon!
Of course it isn't. It's frustrating when artists start these campaigns and then abandon them after just a few releases. Only four of Petty's albums have seen a hi-res Blu Ray release. I know they don't move big numbers, but how expensive can it be to put them out?
Enough that that was 8 years ago, this is now. Dana Dowd recently told me how a Blu ray option for a re-release of the doc on her Dad was extremely high, and would have to sell a much higher number than the planned DVD.
