This is a good one. It's what made me look into some of those early Bee Gees albums before they went to England. I can't say that much of it is as cool or fuzz driven as the track they put on this though.
Have had Volume One: The Hits on vinyl for some time, great stuff on there. My faves are: The Leaves - Hey Joe The Music Machine - Talk Talk The Nazz - Open My Eyes Just picked up Vol 2: Punk, and a 1976 2-LP reissue covering the period of 1965-1968, two very nice used vinyl copies I found. Spinning Vol. 2 right now. Also had picked up the CD boxed set Children Of Nuggets covering the resurgence of psych rock in the 80's, some pretty good stuff on there as well.
When I first heard The Monks, they really blew my mind. Just the fact that they existed at all during the 1960's, and were making that kind of music at the same time that Herman's Hermits were popular. In fact, The Monks ruined "punk" for me, because I realized that punk was really there all along, and those 70's bands weren't really doing anything new... they were just resurrecting something that had been forgotten, much like the entire Nuggets series did.
The original Nuggets is a fantastic collection of lost garage rock, or what in the 60s was called punk rock I believe.. I have done what I believe most people have, which is to sort out my favorite songs from the lesser ones. Another great one is the collection with all the European acts, I think it’s called “Nuggets from Nuggets”. Lots of great songs on that one, such as “Pictures of Matchstick Men” and this one, “Madman Running Through the Field” from Dantelions Chariot
I like the Animals version of Madman Running Through the Fields as well... the common denominator being Andy Summers...
One Of my favorite ones, I think from the original collection. the Easybeats “Gonna Have A Good Time”, with a great screaming vocal in the chorus by I believe Steve Marriott. Rock and roll all night !!!
I learned he was in those two bands about 10 years apart and was surprised each time... he'd really earned his right to succeed by the time the Police broke through...
So many great obscure songs, here’s one that seems to have inspired Zep’s “Communication Breakdown” The Easybeats, “ Sorry”
Used to have the first collection. No idea if I still do. Might have hocked them when I was in college. Still one of the best rare sets ever. Lenny Kaye did a great job.
My favourite tracks on the original 1972 compilation album are : The Electric Prunes I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night) The Standells Dirty Water The Castaways Liar, Liar Nazz Open My Eyes
