  1. “Here Comes The Sun” is the best pop song ever recorded, but thanks for playing. :)

I thought scientists had already proved that "Stayin' Alive" was the perfect pop song.

Anyhow, put me in the camp that thinks "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da":

    - is a wonderful and fun pop song
    - is not among the three best songs on side one of The Beatles
    - is still enjoyable when Paul plays it in concert
    - is worthy of a mention discussing this topic, but would not be among the finalists.

    The article convinced me.
    It makes sense.

But I still agree with John.

A few years ago another article said scientists found that We Are The Champions was the greatest pop song ever.

There's no way that's serious. It's too stupid (in many different ways). Not the least of which is that they're actually saying that "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" has a "surprising" chord progression.

I actually like the tune, but we can't be analyzing too many tunes if we're saying that it has a "surprising chord progression."

But that's not the only way the study was stupid.

Nowadays the so-called scientific studies doesn't mean anything.
There's a scientific study " proving"each and every stupidity you can imagine

In the waning days of my radio career, the songs I was to play during my air shift were all laid out for me by a computer, which analyzed factors such as the song's tempo; whether it was a male artist, female artist or group; and how long it had been since it was last played. Considering all of these factors, it then laid out the songs in was supposed to be the ideal order. Subverting the order he/she was given in any way was grounds for firing the DJ.

As I noted at the time, there was just one problem: the computer didn't have ears. And quite frequently the transition from one song to the next was jarring and unpleasant — something that never would have happened had there been an experienced human being who actually knew these songs making the decisions.

And so it is with this story. The computer doing all of this high-flown analysis doesn't have ears either. And it's quite apparent that, for all of the many data points they may have entered about all the songs that were analyzed, they somehow neglected the "annoyance factor" one!

    Really!

Going through the chord progression in my head without access to the song at the moment (which I'm not sorry for!), the only chords I come up with for the entire song are I, IV, V and iii. And they interact with each other in very standard ways.

    Hardly revolutionary stuff.

That's because they're not succeeding at the cures and so they tackle the music.

Which sounds the way it does, IIRC, because John was really pissed off at having to do so many takes on the song.

I need to amend this. The last of the four chords above should be vi, not iii. My mistake.

    Perfect Beatles pop song?
    -Drive My Car
    -Getting Better
    -And Your Bird Can Sing

One of the two. Drive My Car because it’s one of those few songs where every single aspect stands out. Bassline. Drums. Riff. Vocals. Melody. They all stand out.

I always like the line in Oliver Stone's JFK [re the magic bullet theory]

"Yet the government says it can prove this with some fancy physics in a nuclear laboratory. Of course they can. Theoretical physics can prove an elephant can hang from a cliff with its tail tied to a daisy, but use your eyes -- your common sense --"

In this case, substitute 'ears' for 'eyes'...and you have my opinion...

Best or not, there’s been an awful lot of covers recorded of it. I counted 400 and that was only somewhere through the middle of the “L”s.

Penny Lane would be the perfect pop song to me. I don't know how surprising the chord changes are, though.
