Bob Lovely Super Gort In Memoriam

    Dumbest Records of All Time

    All,

    Here is my list:

    Transfusion--Nervous Norvus
Hot Diggity--Perry Como (play this one too long and you could go insane)
    Tutti Frutti--Pat Boone
    Party Doll--Steve Lawrence (please!)
    Beep, Beep--Playmates
The Purple People Eater--Sheb Wooley (at least it has a fun beat)
    Lollipop--Chordettes
    Pink Shoe Laces--Dodie Stevens
Tall Paul--Annette (I know she was cute!)
    Running Bear--Johnny Preston
    Mr. Custer--Larry Verne
Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It's Flavor On The Bed Post Overnight--Lonnie Donnegan (at least the skiffle is fun)
Popsicles and Icicles--Mermaids (topped Twist and Shout by the Beatles in 64')
They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha! Ha!--Napoleon XIV
Snoopy Versus The Red Baron--Royal Guardsmen
Simon Says-1910 Fruitgum Company (topped Revolution by the Beatles in 68')
Gitarzan--Ray Stevens (I could never see the Ray Stevens novelty song thing)
Jingle, Jangle--Archies (topped No Matter What by Badfinger in 70')
Puppy Love--Donny Osmond (the Paul Anka version was enough, thank you)
Half-Breed--Cher (did we really need this?, topped Superstition by Stevie Wonder in 73')
The Streak--Ray Stevens (topped The Loco-motion by Grand Funk in 74')

Remember, all of these records were big hits when they were released!

    Bob

Larry Groce -- "Junk Food Junkie" (1976 (?))

This one's always been a little hard to swallow (pun intended).

Yes, thumbs down to all 9.

Grant, you mention several by Dickie Goodman. What about "Kong" (1977)?

I like Amos Moses by Jerry Reed and anything Jim Stafford recorded.

I think a record is "dumber" if it's trying to be serious and fails miserably, than if it's a novelty thing that wants to be dumb.

I don't think "Junk Food Junkie" or "Purple People Eater" or "Mr. Jaws" have any aspirations to be anything other than dumb. But "Mr. Roboto" and "MacArthur Park" think they're serious, meaningful tunes. That's really dumb. Hilarious, but dumb.

There are 2 that I feel are the worst and the dumbest the first is an entire album, Lord Sutch With Heavy Friends and the other is the song The Fang by Nervous Norvis.

I always liked that song, actually thought it was great; one of those one-off things that really rocked in a loose, under-produced kind of way. I don't hear it much any more but I'd like to have a copy!

Thanks for contributing that, I really enjoyed it. What a funny story.

What I really think is funny, though, is not so much that there's a phone number in the song (which I think was a pretty good hook), but that people who get that number don't change it!

Or that others actually pick up a phone and dial a number in a song.

    It boggles the mind...

O.K. Bob. That's it. I'm outta the sandbox. I'm goin' over to Grants to play with him and Bradley.

  10. Grant

Grant Life is a rock, but the radio rolled me!

    Never heard of Kong.

Oh well, I guess you have to have a twisted sense of humor to like the ones I mentioned. Do you like the classic Saturday Night Live, especially from the late 70s?

In reality, Grant lives in Arizona and I live in Minnesota.

'Cause I don't know the name of this atrocity, I'll repeat some of the lyrics for y'all. This song has it all. Overly sentimental lyrics and the most hideous 70's overproduction imaginable. Ok, here goes:

"It's the last game of the season, on a Friday night at home. And no one knows the reason, why the blind man didn't come."

That's all I remember. I think I had this on a KTel collection, way back when. Awful!

I apologize in advance if this song has some positive sentimental value to any of you.

I'm sure someone here can tell the board more about this one. Can't believe someone else hasn't posted it yet! :D

That's another David Geddes atrocity called "Last Game Of The Season (A Blind Man In THe Bleachers)," from 1975. It followed up that "Run Joey Run" song.

    How about:

    "Once You Understand," by Think

I inexplicably had this 45 when I was four back in '74. Turns out it was a reissue of a song from '71.

Oh no! Grandmas all time favorite song. She used to sing it to me every week with a tear in her eye. That is until she died just yesterday. Fell into a vat of whiskey. Took her 3 days to die. Several of us jumped in to save her but she fought us off valiantly.

It's becoming very clear from the discussions on this thread that the entire David Geddes catalog ("Run Joey Run" etc) is in definite need of a thorough remastering by Steve Hoffman.

You might check this link: http://members.aol.com/boardwalk7/goodman/goodman.html

This record got quite a bit of airplay on Indianapolis' WNDE (1260 AM) at the time of it's release. (I no longer have the original Shock Records single, unfortunately. I'd had more than enough of it.)

    How about:
"Don't Mess With My Toot Toot" by Rockin' Sydney
and not trying to be anti-religious...but I got really tired of hearing "Dear Mr. Jesus" when it came out in the late 1980s. The song is fine, but the little girl's voice who sang it grates on my ears.

How about "Up Your Nose With A Rubber Nose" by Gabe Kaplan?

That puts me in mind of the incomparable "Drop-Kick Me, Jesus (Through the Goalposts of Life)" by Bobby Bare. You've gotta hear it to believe it: "Drop-kick me, Jesus...straight through the heart of them righteous up-rights..."

P.S. I've never been able to find the hit version of "Dear Mr. Jesus" on CD. Any leads?

Could it be the same girl who sang the intro on XTC's 'Dear God'?;)

I've never heard Dear Mr. Jesus, actually. It was a hit?

When a local radio station here in Bemidji has a Radiothon to end child abuse, every hour they play "Dear Mr. Jesus."
