Hell, Surf's Up would have been better without that track, even if they had not replaced it with any other.

I heard the original song this was based on the other day, by a female singer whose name I forget. It's from the 1950s, and the production of the original actually sounds BETTER. To put this on an album next to such sublime stuff as "Feel Flows" and "'Til I Die" - I just don't know what they were thinking.

"Murder By Numbers" is certainly better than the godawful "Mother". My only gripe is that, being a so-called "bonus" track, it's tacked on to the end of the CD, where it does not really seem to fit. "Tea in the Sahara" works fine as a closer, though my choice for closing track would have been either "King of Pain" or "Synchronicity II".

I got the tape back in 1983 and can't imagine any other song ending it. Don't get why thy left it off, the sides are more balanced with it included.

@c-eling I asked the OP earlier in the thread when I noticed all of the b-sides and was told in a reply post that b-sides were fair game. I suggested having the gorts change the thread title.

It was a B side. Neither an outake nor unreleased.

Edit. I responded to the post before I read the whole thread. This issue has already seen discussed.

As I mentioned above your post, I asked the OP since so many b-sides were included in this thread and was told b-sides could be included.

“Cities” would not have fit the concept of a day.

Not sure if this counts but... "Demon's Eye was not released in the US. Omitted from Fireball. I've always thought it should have ended side one and "Anyone's Daughter" could have been a b-side or something . Fireball would've been a bit better.

Since b-sides count..."I'm Down" should've ended side 2 of Yesterday & Today for an even dozen. What a great album that would've been.

Maybe not in a direct way, but the song is about a day in the city and passing time in it. I had read one time about the dilemma the band had diciding if is should be included and of course they did not. I do think however if they had included Cities it would have fit in. I mean the Magnificent Moodies would have made it work!

The original song was by the Robins - Riot on Cell Block #9. Beach boys recorded it during the Party sessions in 65, then resurrected it in 69-70 for their live shows. It's at 30:52 here at their Big Sur Festival show in 1970 (a great soundboard and great show, incidentally - although songs 6-9 are not from the soundboard):

My favorite version is from the Rockabilly Queen Wanda Jackson:

Wanda Jackson - Riot in Cell Block number9

Why Mike decided to rewrite it with cringe-worthy lyrics is beyond me - he should have just recorded it as a cover just as they played it live

Genesis; B-side of "Misunderstanding", "Evidence of Autumn" should have been on "Duke".
And furthermore, "Duke" should have been spread out on two LPs.

Hell yes. Two great tracks there. The Crowes really left a lot of great stuff in the studio (Feathers, The Fear Years, Grinnin, Dirty Hair Halo, Pastoral, Exit, Title Song, Tied Up and Swallowed, Peace Anyway, Last Time Again).

I love U2’s The Joshua Tree, but I can name at least five of it’s parent b-sides that would have been better selections than Trip Through Your Wires:

    Silver And Gold
    Deep In The Heart
Luminous Times (Hold On To Love)
    Walk To The Water
    Spanish Eyes

I even think Race Against Time would have made for a better filler track.

Just my opinion, but I don’t agree.
To me P&E works better as an excellent outtake.
Without the two mentioned songs Who’s Next would become a bit too heavy-handed imo.
