One thing the Get Back film has established (for those willing to recognize it) is how important Paul McCartney was as a leader and driving force within the Beatles at the late stage of the band’s career. I think John probably filled this role in the early years, but for various reasons surrendered to Paul.

This photo is a nice snapshot of Paul in his hands-on role while the others stood around waiting to go home.

We all knew Paul was the leader during that phase of their career.

I don’t understand why someone has to be the leader. It was the chemistry that these four guys had that made them great. Each one was essential to the whole. So there was no leader.

Yep, he looks like a leader here. But only a cow paid any attention to him ... ;)

Yoko had the best take on the leadership issue.
She said that it was indeed Paul who drove and led the band in its final years but John always was its spiritual leader.
    I can live with that.

Paul manned the ship…John was still and forever captain. Leadership dynamic in a band is about more than musical dominance. I say this with a newfound love and respect for Paul as a result of this film; but John was still the leader albeit in the back seat.

I kind of fall into the they where leaderless camp. But that said, Paul was definitely the engine of the group for the last couple of years.

But as you said: Sometimes even John had to stand up and act like a captain:

Well, after Brian Epstein died, the Beatles were in a precarious position. They had stopped touring, and John was becoming more distracted and less engaged in the group. Paul did take on a leadership role with mixed results, but the group stayed together long enough to give the world those final glorious albums. For that, we should be grateful to him.

Mickey, everyone knows you hate John so you're using your bias opinion pretending it's the truth to create a Paul vs. John thread. Yes The Beatles lasted 2 years with Paul as leader before they fell apart.

Paul was the musical leader and leader of The Beatles late like you say, but under his leadership, Ringo quit because of Paul and then George quit because of Paul. Geoff Emerick quit in 1968 because of Paul. He tried all kinds of ways - and he loved the band, but apparently he rubbed people the wrong way. I'm not saying he did anything wrong, but the participants involved did. People say if you're a leader never say 'I don't want to be the leader and I never did' cause then nobody will listen as we saw in Get Back.'

Looks like when Paul was quieter at Apple, once he conceded some of his leadership and let it run more like a team affair, they thrived of course with help from Preston.

So who said he wasn't the leader before 'Get Back'? I guess you mean some who think John was always leader beyond just the music -yes John was the spiritual leader like Wild Cat said.

I completely agree with this…but the key term to keep in mind is “leadership *role*”.

Doubt the Abbey Road LP would have gotten done, if it wasn't for Macca's persistence.

Arnie just want to tell you that I always appreciate you coming in to lighten a thread that you know may have some bickering on it. You're very consistent, you're very unbias and knowledgable which I appreciate, always in a good mood trying to keep us remembering that it's only music and we should take things lighter. I haven't mentioned my appreciation to you in a couple of years and I thought about it the other day - always nice to see you appear and I hope you're having a good 2022 so far.

    Keep on shining Arnie!
