These last few weeks have been full of unexpected twists and turns so for our latest ‘Sticking Out Of My Back Pocket’ we’ve taken a look through Paul’s catalogue to search out songs of home and kindness.

Paul often talks of how important family life is to him, so we weren’t surprised to find these comforting themes running through many of his lyrics. So, with the idea of highlighting some of Paul’s lesser-known songs (along with a few classics for good measure!), we’re happy to unveil this month’s new playlist below.

Think of it as a hug from us to you and we very much hope you and yours are keeping well and safe.

What a great list for this month! Somebody Who Cares is especially evocative of what we all are going through right now.

"When your body is coming apart at the seams
And the whole thing's feeling low
    You're convincing yourself
That there's nobody there, I know
    I know how you feel
Like somebody has taken the wheels off your car
When you had somewhere to go
    Well, it's annoying
Not going to get very far, I know
    But somebody cares
There's always someone, somewhere, you should know by now
    Always somebody who cares"

    Long Leather Coat

An animal rights rocker song with great vocals, lyrics and harmonies.

    Lyrics:

    I'm all alone, said she
No one to phone, no one to touch me
I'm on my way said the man in
    The long leather coat
    As he started his car.

I'm glad you came, said she
You got my note, you understood it
He smiled as he hung up his long leather coat
On the back of the door.

Stroll on baby, step right in
help yourself to a handful of
    ev'rything in sight
    let the party begin
stroll on baby, step right in
help yourself to a handful of
    ev'rything in sight
    let the party begin.

oh, I love your coat, said she
    he said, well, thank you
in your note you said you had
    no one to touch you.
    so shall I go through

why, yes, she said, you can go on ahead
    she took out the key
and she locked him into the bedroom
    oh, oh, oh.

now I am alone, said she
she took a can of really red paint
and she sprayed up and down on
    the long leather coat
    on the bloody red floor.

so long, baby, I took you in
just to show you that your long leather coat
is really nothing but a handful of skin
stroll on, baby, step right in
help yourself to a handful of
    ev'rything in sight
    let the party begin.

    let the party begin.

well, let the party, the party begin.

Down To The River - is slight and repetitive but enjoyable. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the track and remember when it first came out being intrigued that Paul played the harmonica!! In an alternative universe, it might have been the hidden track on the LP instead of Cosmically Conscious. Actually, it would have fit nicely on the McCartney LP. 3.5/5

I Can't Imagine - is another pleasant, middle-of-the-road track from these sessions. The intro is quite nice but thereafter not much happens for the remainder of the four plus minutes. Definitely B-side / bonus track material for me. 2.5/5

"Long Leather Coat" is one of the few "extra" songs from "Off the Ground" which I find entertaining.

I think it would have been a worthy inclusion in the album proper.

    Kicked Around No More

A highlight. This is a beautiful ballad song with wonderful soulful vocals, great lyrics and heaven harmonies, a fantastic piano intro and an interesting chords' progression with unexpected beats, a perfect combination, at the exact moment when they are needed. Bravo!!!

    Lyrics:

Take my blessings with you when you go,
I don't wanna know no more.
Head to toe, from top to bottom I've been kicked around,
Don't wanna be kicked around no more

I'll be thinking of you when you go,
Take a walk along the shore.
Why should I pretend that nothing is the matter now?
Don't wanna be kicked around no more

My life could be so sweet,
    I can't remember when I started running.
The water underneath the bridge can't keep a secret,
    She's still running home.

Take my blessing with you when you go,
To the next one you adore, ooh.
Head to toe, and top to bottom I've been kicked around,
Ain't gonna be kicked around no more

    Don't wanna be kicked around,
    Ain't gonna be kicked around,

Don't wanna be kicked around no more.

My life could be so sweet,
    I can't remember when I started running.
The water underneath the bridge can't keep a secret,
    I'm not running now.

Take my blessing with you when you go,
I don't wanna know no more.
Head to toe, from top to bottom I've been kicked around,
Don't wanna be kicked around no more

    Don't wanna be kicked around,
    Ain't gonna be kicked around,
Don't wanna be kicked around no more.

Count me as a big fan of this album. I managed to snag all the b-sides when I was in high school by hitting up the record shows.

It’s a shame that some of those tracks are obscure because many are as strong, if not stronger than some on the album.

Kicked Around No More - 9/10
    Big Boys Bickering - 6/10
    Long Leather Coat - 8/10
Down to the River - 7/10
Can’t Imagine - 6/10 (it loses a point because of the intro)
    Style Style - 8/10
    Sweet Sweet Memories - 7/10

Personally I would like to go straight to Flaming Pie now but if y all sants to discuss the Fireman suggest stuff Im fine with that. Perhaps we don t need to take it song by song
I don t dislike this stuff find it hard to separate those albums into songs. The Third Fireman album of course is an exeption

    I Can't Imagine

A great song with strong vocals, harmonies and melody. The instrumental mix is interesting with a fantastic acoustic sound and a little Spanish or Latin touch.

    Lyrics:

For me to say what I'm about to say?
Could take a bit of courage?
But I can summon up enough of this and maybe more??
Without your love I know I'd find it difficult
    No reason to continue?
So how can anyone live not knowing what love is
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before
I don't wanna think about it anyhow
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before
We don't have to talk about it
    No, not now
Need a lie, when I don't have to lie?
    It get me into trouble?
And I've been keepin' out of trouble for a long time now?
So this is true, it's me for you eternity?
    Can go and last forever?
But while we're taking our time?
I pity those that love left behind??
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before?
I don't wanna think about it anyhow, anyhow?
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before?
We don't have to talk about it
    Oh, not now?
    Talk about it now?
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before?
I don't wanna think about it, think about it anyhow ?
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before
I don't have to talk about it no, not now??
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before?
I don't wanna think about it think about it anyhow?
I can't imagine how it feels to never been in love like this before

    A fact:

From Paul McCartney: Recording Sessions (1969-2013). A Journey Through Paul McCartney's Songs After The Beatles.:

"The song includes a psychedelic ending with percussion and electric guitar, an excerpt from a four minute instrumental called “On A Pedestal” written in France during the same sojourn that inspired “I Owe It All To You“."
