To be clear, Egypt Station shows again that Paul's creativity seems inexhaustible, the source of music inside of him hasn't ran dried yet,
it's still vibrant, interesting and occasionally producing some surprisingly good compositions. Unluckily it's also not totally meeting my taste.

    I Don't Know 3/5
I'd like to like it more, but I dont' know. The part with the "fine"/"love of mine" rhyme reminds too much of My Valentine. It's a good song nonetheless.
    Come On To Me 3/5
A fun, raucous, booming rocker. I like the sound of the tom tom's in this one.
    Happy With You 2,5/5
An acoustic song about losing your bad habits and feeling happy again. I don't find it particularly inspiring. The bridges lyrics sound like forced poetry.
    Who Cares 3,5/5
Mid-tempo rocker with an anti-bullism message. Does Paul really care about you? See the first song of the album. Anyway, it's a good listen.
Particulary how music and lyrics marry together in the "you're a ghost in the dark" bits.
    Fuh You 2/5
It's not as bad as when I listened to it the first times. Now I'm accustomed to it. And I've overcomed the terrible, terrible shock caused by what that "fuh" could mean. It's catchy, in its own silly way.
    Confidante 2/5
That's a riff I could compose myself, I think. Tendentially, this song bores me. I don't like the lines: "In my imaginary world / where butterflies wear army boots / and stomp around the forest / chanting long lost anthems" - it sounds awful. What does it mean? Am I missing something?

In my intro, I've mentioned "surprisingly good compositions". They come later.

Somehow I find it doubtful that Paul would wander off into a room under the Abbey Road stairs in the middle of a session [when else would they have been in Abbey Road?]...

I bet it was quite common in those old flats to put a closet under the staircase, though.....

I don't know, McCartney has commented on how they used to sneak off during sessions to have a smoke.

Here's the room and staircase in question.

Paul did play his ES promo "Under The Staircase" show here. Seems pretty nifty to be just coincidence.

Maybe it was just all clever lyrical symbolism on Paul's part. It would be pretty silly for him to sit in that closet and write music.

I thought that was to the roof. Some story where John almost fell/jumped off one night?

Apparently Mr Kite was high as a kite on acid that night.

Yeah. It was in the Anthology doc I think. Haven't watched that in years. Don't fully recall.

If I 'm recalling correctly , I think Macca got John off the roof and brought him home where he dropped some acid for the first time.

Your mentioning of that roof incident reminded me of something else...
A couple of years back Macca was on The Howard Stern show and Stern brought that incident up and asked him about it. Stern said he'd be very upset if someone was too high to do a show or a session. McCartney said it was no big deal to him and I'm sure it wasn't. Just another night with Lennon.

If I remember correctly, McCartney was talking about the other kind of smoke under the stairs.

A beautiful acoustic song. The expression of an intimate emotion when someone shares life with a loved one is one of the most honest and thoughtful aspects of a close relationship. Be happy is essential, healthy, and transformer. Through the smooth chord progression and tender vocals, the heartfelt verses are an open heart that reveals a truthful person who had dark times and now enjoys the simplest things in life and communicates intense joy. It's a brilliant emotional combination of sounds and words that creates a pleasant composition. It's pure poetry. Simply amazing.

    Lyrics:

    I sat round all day
    I used to get stoned
    I liked to get wasted
    But these days I don't
    'cos I'm happy, with you
I got lots of good things to do,
    oh yeah

    I walked around angry
    I used to feel bad
    But nowadays my days
    Don't have to be sad
    'cos I'm happy, with you
I got lots of good things to do,
    oh yeah

Like, hear the high clear robin sing
    Walk a bluebell carpet
    Watch the children playing games
Catch a moon and then drop it
    Hear the gentle mantle roll
    On a frosty morning
    See the mighty ocean break
    Like a sailor's warning

I used to drink too much
    Forgot to come home
    I lied to my doctor
    But these days I don't
    'cos I'm happy, with you
I got lots of good things to do

Throw a pocketful of coins in the Trevi fountain
See an ice cold running stream
    Rushing down the mountain
Hear a new born baby lamb
    Calling for its mother
    Watching reunited friends
    Loving one another

    I sat around all day
    I liked to get stoned
    I used to get wasted
    But these days I don‘t
    'cos I'm happy, with you
I got lots of good things to do, oh yeah

    Happy with you
    I'm happy with you
    Happy with you

I almost agree with your ratings, do think the first half of ES is as weak as the 2nd in New, fortunately the 2nd half of the record is a blast.....

A powerful pop song. In times of trouble, where everything is dark and the attacks, in multiples forms, are present every day causing mental or physical damage, Paul stands up to give emotional support with his anti-bullying composition, which provides a positive message through music. The key is the intensity and tone of the vocals combined with a harmonic and strong melody to deliver direct, meaningful, and powerful verses. It's a sublime use of talents to inspire a change. It's the care anthem.

    Lyrics:

    Did you ever get hurt
    By the words people say
And the things that they do
    When they're picking on you

    Did you ever get sad
By the games that they play
    When they're making you feel
    Like a rusty old wheel

That's been left in the rain

Who cares what the idiots say
Who cares what the idiots do
Who cares about the pain in your heart
Who cares about you, I do

    'cos you're worth much more
Of that you can be sure
    No need to hide
    The love you've got inside

    Did you ever get lost
In the heart of a crowd
    And the people around
    Keep on pushing you down

    Is it driving you mad
    And you're screaming out loud
    Are you wondering who's
    Going to recognise you

You're a ghost in the dark

Who cares what the idiots say
Who cares what the idiots do
Who cares about the pain in your heart
    Who cares about you

Who cares what the idiots say
Who cares what the idiots do
Who cares about the pain in your heart
Who cares about you, I do

You've been left in the rain

    Paul McCartney’s “Who Cares”

"How involved was Paul McCartney in the edit and in review-and-approval?

Brantley Gutierrez: "I’ve know Paul for about 13 years and we have a good relationship. I feel lucky that he’s very trusting of me and goes along with ideas like this. The record label didn’t even know this video was happening until the day of production. It was clandestine in a lot of ways, but you can get away with that when it’s Paul McCartney. If I had tried that with some other artist, I would have been in trouble. But Paul just said, “We’re going to do it ourselves.”

We showed him the cut once we had picture lock, before final color. He called on the phone, “Great. I don’t have any notes. It’s cool. I love it and will sign off.” That was literally it for Paul. It’s one of the few music videos where there was no going back and forth between the management, the artist, and the record label. Once Paul signed off on it, the record label was fine with it."
